(See text below for the full description.)
The Golden Oriole Katana is a high quality and fully functional reproduction of an original Japanese Katana.
Each blade is handforged from 1065 high-carbon steel which is then differentially tempered using the traditional clay-method to create an edge of 60 HRC and a back of 40 HRC hardness.
This also creates a very authentic and clear hardening line or hamon, visible in the picture as a wavy line along the length of the blade.
The Golden Oriole has mirror-polished bo-hi or grooves over almost the full length of the blade, they reduce the weight and produce the characteristic sound when executing a perfect cut.
The handle or tsuka is covered in real rayskin and the wrapping or tsuka-ito is made from blue Japanese cotton.
Underneath the wrapping two small ornaments or menuki are placed.
The tsuba or guard is beautifully decorated with a praying mantis stealthily stalking a cricket, unaware that he himself is being stalked by the Golden Oriole bird.
The scabbard or saya has a deep blue laquer and its cord or sageo is made from blue Japanese cotton.
Do not make the mistake to see this katana as some chromed wallhanger.
Although this sword is highly decorative, it is fully functional and can be used for tameshigiri, or cutting practice.
The traditional clay-tempering method used for this sword creates a differential hardening in which the cutting edge reaches a much higher hardness than the back of the blade.
The main advantage; the sword receives excellent cutting abilities while still maintaining enough resilience to withstand the repeated impacts of practice.
After the handforging process and the extremely important heat-treating each katanablade is sharpened by hand to a razorsharpness (!), after which the back of the blade is handpolished.
A beautiful example of a mid-priced sword.
