CPM is a type of powder steel. Powder steel, like CPM S35VN, is produced by atomizing molten steel into fine powder particles which are pressed together under high pressure and sintered into a solid block. This process leaves you with a finer, more uniform microstructure than traditional forged steel. The result is better sharpness retention, wear resistance and toughness. As such, powder steel is popular for use in top-quality knives that retain their sharpness well but are also still relatively easy to sharpen.

## How good is CPM S35VN steel? 
When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is, of course, relative. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for CPM S35VN? CPM S35VN offers a good balance between toughness, sharpness retention and corrosion resistance. As such, it is often used for top-quality pocket knives. Thanks to the addition of niobium, CPM S35VN is even tougher than CPM S30V steel making it more resistant to chipping. In addition, the refined grain structure ensures that S35VN is easier to sharpen than other top-quality types of steel. 

## What are the disadvantages of CPM S35VN steel? 
With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of CPM S35VN in mind. Even though CPM S35VN retains its sharpness pretty well, it can lose its sharpness a little faster than CPM S30V.

## History of Victorinox 
Karl Elsener founded Victorinox in 1884 in Ibach, Switzerland. Elsener opened his own workshop to produce knives for the Swiss army. The Swiss army knife has been used by the army ever since 1891. Victorinox's success began in 1897 when they patented the first 'Officer's Knife'. The knife contained several practical tools in one compact design. It was the foundation upon which the Swiss Army knife as we know it today was built. 
 
The brand really took shape in 1909 when Karl Elsener chose the name 'Victorinox'. The name is a combination of the name 'Victoria' as a tribute to his mother and 'inox' as an abbreviation of inoxydable, the French word for 'stainless'. Today, Victorinox is one of the leading brands in the knife industry. Everyone knows the iconic red pocket knife with the distinctive shield on the handle.

## New Spartan Blades knives for 2020


In 2020 there are immediately three new releases in the Silver Class - Professional Grade. The knives released are called the [Spartan Alala](kato://product/USSBSL004BKBK), [Spartan Damysus](kato://product/USSBSL003BKBK) and [Spartan Machai](kato://product/USSBSL002BKBK). Three decent fixed knives made from 1095 Cro Van carbon steel and a handle made from canvas micarta. You can clearly see that Spartan Blades designer Curtis Iovito left his mark on these knives. KA-BAR can be recognized by  the type of steel used and the finish. The sheaths are made from plastic instead of kydex, but still have the appreciated Spartan carrying options. With prices between 169 and 219 euros these knives are not that cheap, but also not as expensive as the knives from the Gold Class.

## Who is Bill Harsey?


Bill Harsey was born in 1955 in Oregon, United States. His family was initially comprised of lumberjacks but at some point Bill decided to work with knives. Ever since he definitely earned his stripes in the knife world. As a maker of unique knives Bill is incredibly popular. He, however, is mostly known for his cooperations with large knife brands such as Gerber, CRKT, Lone Wolf Knives, Ruger, Spartan Blades and, of course, Chris Reeve Knives. This is, after all, not the first time Bill has worked with CRK. At the 2003 Blade Show Harsey and Chris Reeve won the ‘Collaboration Knife of the Year’ award with the Chris Reeve Green Beret. A tactical, robust fixed knife, made for the U.S. Army Special Forces. In 2007 CRK and Bill Harsey won the ‘American Made Knife of the Year’ award at the Blade Show with the Chris Reeve Pacific Knife. Another fixed knife, made for the American army. This time to celebrate the 50th birthday of the first command troops. These troops are mostly active in the Pacific, hence the name.

After Chris’ departure Chris Reeve Knives needed a new hit. A knife that could emphasize the fact that even without Chris they could come up with innovative features and introduce top-quality knives. It is therefore understandable that Anne and Tim Reeve once again took a leap of faith with Bill Harsey. In the end their gamble paid off. At the 2018 Blade Show they were, once again, successful. This time with the Impinda which won the ‘American Made Knife of the Year’ award.

As such the Spartan knives are not always accessible to all. It is why Spartan decided to cooperate with [KA-BAR Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_387). Everyone has heard of this brand thanks to the iconic USMC knives which already left a mark during the Second World War.


KA-BAR also produces knives in the United States, but according to a slightly more automated process. By combining the Spartan Blades designs with KA-BAR's production capacity you are left with a new collection of cool knives that are available for amazing prices.
