## What is CPM? 
CPM is a type of powder steel. Powder steel, like CPM S30V, is produced by atomizing molten steel into fine powder particles which are pressed together under high pressure and sintered into a solid block. This process leaves you with a finer, more uniform microstructure than traditional forged steel. The result is better sharpness retention, wear resistance and toughness. As such, powder steel is popular for use in top-quality knives that retain their sharpness well but are also still relatively easy to sharpen. 

## How good is CPM S30V steel? 
When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is, of course, relative. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for CPM S30V? CPM S30V offers a good balance between wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance. The addition of vanadium carbide, for example, ensures that the blade retains its sharpness during long term use. Thanks to the good balance between hardness and toughness it is also better equipped to handle chipping. Finally, the chromium content ensures this steel is resistant to corrosion. 

## What are the disadvantages of CPM S30V steel? 
With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of CPM S30V in mind. For CPM S30V heat treatment is key if you want to make the most of it. The wrong treatment can affect the toughness and sharpness retention. S30V is also a relatively hard type of steel. Combined with the toughness this makes it a little more difficult to sharpen. 

## Which is better? CPM S30V compared to...? 
Many types of steel are used to produce pocket knives. But which steel type is better? First and foremost, this depends on what you are looking for. However, if you do want to make a comparison: CPM S30V is similar to CPM S35VN and CPM S45VN.

### CPM S35VN
[CPM S35VN](kato://category/pocketknifesteeltypecpms35vn) is an upgrade of S30V steel. It contains niobium and is therefore tougher and easier to sharpen. It is similar in terms of wear and corrosion resistance. 

### CPM S45VN
CPM S45VN is a top-quality stainless steel. The goal for [CPM S45VN](kato://category/pocketknifesteeltypecpms45vn) was to produce a steel type with a better corrosion resistance. The good balance between toughness and sharpness retention, however, had to remain. It is an upgrade for its predecessor CPM S35VN.

## Similarities

Two favourites among knife enthusiasts when it comes to practical, lightweight EDC pocket knives. Almost every knife lover has had one of the two.

And with the [Griptilian](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1181) and [Bugout](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1180) Benchmade has two of the most popular knives from this category in its range. But what are the differences and similarities between these two pocket knives?

## Similarities

We start with the similarities between the Benchmade Bugout and Griptilian. It goes without saying that both models are made by Benchmade in Portland, Oregon, USA. And in the basis they also share the same type of steel: CPM S30V. The Axis lock is another similarity. As such both models are great for both left and right-handed use.

There are also both Mini Griptilians and Mini Bugouts. So size also shouldn't be an issue.

## Differences between the Benchmade Bugout and Griptilian.

But there are, of course, also differences between both knives. Let's start with the number of available versions. The Griptilian is available with scales made from FRN or G10\. Both composite materials, even though G10 is a little more solid. But that is not all! The Griptilian, like the Bugout is available with a thumb stud. But also with a thumb hole! Quite the difference. And when you closely look at the shapes of the blades you see that the Griptilian, like the Bugout, is also available with a droppoint blade. But also with a blade that looks like a sheepsfoot.

Benchmade started 2020 well with the release of the new Bugout 535BK-2 and Bailout 537GY-1. Not surprising considering the popularity of both knives. The surprising thing, however, was the choice of material. Benchmade didn't simply change the colour. They did a lot more than that! They used a completely new material for the handle! Who would have thought? We also see cool new models such as the Tengu, designed by Jared Oeser, and the new Mini Bugouts. Benchmade's Troy Hellman will tell you more about these new knives in the video below.

## Benchmade Bugout 535BK-2 DLC CF-Elite


With the new [Bugout 535BK-2](kato://product/BE535BK-2) the wish of many Benchmade fans is fulfilled: a completely black Bugout without colour accents. Instead of the matt, black-grey coating we see on the Bugout 535GRY-1 Benchmade used a smoother black DLC coating. The steel remained the same: S30V steel. On this Bugout we also find the new handle material: CF-Elite, instead of grivory. A handle material that is made from polymer reinforced with carbon fibre. A rock-solid material that was originally used in the car and aviation industry. CF-Elite is no less than 50% more solid than grivory and weighs less. Yes, you read it right. It weighs even less.

## Why do I carry a folder?


There are many reasons to carry a folder, and there’s a lot to be said for having a simple tool on your person at all times. Luckily for us, there is a blade out there to suit everyone, and we all have our preferences. Some people need more nuanced tools such as awls or files and therefore prefer to carry a [SAK](kato://content/migrated_pageid_477) or a [Leatherman](kato://content/migrated_pageid_413) over a folder. And if you are carrying a folder, then comes further nuance in our choice! Are you an EDC type carrier, preferring a more tactical blade like a [Spyderco Paramilitary](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1207). Or maybe your job requires a tougher blade and you're carrying a more substantial folder like the [Benchmade Bugout](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1180). There is literally a tool for everyone.


For me it’s usually that I’m either working outside on some DIY chores or around the canoe center where I work, or I need a smaller blade to supplement my belt knife when out camping. In the majority of situations I find myself in, my belt knife is used to establish my main camp. Be that for firewood processing, sleep system setup, building pot hangers for the cooking that night, whatever the case may be. However, after this, my main knife tends to be put away. Sometimes I’ll even throw it back in the backpack. Sacrilege! I know... But this is where my multitool or pocket knife will come in. Usually only the smaller tasks like opening food packaging, slicing vegetables or making utensils are left to do at camp. Why carry a 4+ inch belt knife on you all night when you’re most likely not going to need it again? The same can be said of things like ferro rods and dump pouches by the way. It may be controversial, but personally I find these things quite unnecessary and frankly cumbersome to be carrying on my belt all evening. I like to feel a little more free and nimble when moving around camp or further afield when I’m collecting water or gathering more firewood.

[Benchmade](kato://content/migrated_pageid_282) also made an appearance at the 2019 Shot Show. With an enormous stand, dozens of employees and multiple new products they definitely wowed the crowds. Upon arrival we were happily welcomed by the Benchmade team and were given the opportunity to take a look at all new pocket knives with Hans Albing, the product line manager at Benchmade. It was an amazing opportunity!


## The Benchmade Griptilian collection got a S30V steel upgrade


Big news! The Benchmade Griptilian collection will get a S30V steel upgrade. Initially Benchmade used 154CM steel. A great type of steel for daily use. S30V steel, however, is a lot more robust, stainless and retains its sharpness longer. Not too bad right? The new Griptilians could become a little more expensive than the 154CM steel version. Fortunately you don't have to worry. According to Benchmade it will only be a minor difference.


## The Benchmade 560-1 Freek


Another famous model which was given an update is the Benchmade Freek. This new version of the Freek has been enhanced with a handle made from grey and black layered G10, instead of the grivory/versaflex handle. The blade also got an upgrade from CPM S30V steel to CPM M4 steel. An incredibly solid and hard type of steel. To add a little colour Benchmade added a thin red G10 liner on the inside of the handle. Red anodized aluminium standoffs keep the handle together. If you are already a fan of the original Freek collection, this robust version is something you will love as well!
