## Steel used for the Condor axes


The Condor axes are made from 1060 or 1075 carbon steel. With both types of steel it is key that they are stored in a dry place. They are namely not corrosion resistant. Our tip: clean them after use and occasionally add a couple drops of oil. As such you can enjoy them for years. Fortunately the fact that carbon steel is not corrosion resistant is something a lot of people accept because this type of steel also has a lot of advantages. It is namely fairly easy to keep carbon steel razor-sharp and it won't break as easily as other comparable axes made from stainless steel.

When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is of course relative term. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for 1075 Carbon? The carbon content in 1075 Carbon steel not only ensures that it is a hard type of steel it also adds to its sharpness retention. 1075 is a popular choice for budget-friendly knives and is relatively easy to sharpen.

## What are the disadvantages of 1075 Carbon steel? 
With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of 1095 Carbon in mind. 1075 needs to be maintained properly. If you don't you will be faced with rust and corrosion. 1075 is relatively tough and needs to be sharpened more often than other steel types with a higher carbon content. 

## Which is better? 1075 Carbon compared to...? 
Many types of steel are used to produce fixed knives. But which steel type is better? First and foremost, this depends on what you are looking for. However, if you do want to make a comparison: 1075 is similar to 1095 Carbon steel. With a carbon content of 0.95% 1095 is harder and retains its sharpness better. It is, however, more brittle dan 1075 and less tough.

You have never been more sure: you are looking for a fixed knife with a blade made from 1075 Carbon steel. But which brand uses this type of steel for their fixed knives and appeals to you most? ## 1075 Carbon maintenance 
1075 Carbon, like any type of steel, needs to maintained to make the most of it. For 1075 carbon steel maintenance is key to prevent rust and corrosion. Properly clean and dry the blade after use. Especially after use in wet or humid environments. Afterwards add [a thin layer of protective oil](kato://category/ballistolbrandpage) to the blade to decrease the risk of corrosion. Also make sure you store your knife in a sheath that won't absorb moisture. Leather, for instance, can absorb and retain moisture which can cause your blade to rust.

A sharp edge ensures that your fixed knife will function as it should. But how do you make sure the blade of your 1075 Carbon steel blade is always sharp? 1075 Carbon steel is relatively easy to sharpen. For the best results we recommend sharpening stones with an average to fine grain. Take good care of the blade: properly clean it, dry it and add that thin coat of oil and you will notice that your sharpness retention will improve as well.

Horace Kephart has gone down in history as legend of the outdoors and is seen by some to be the grandfather of modern bushcraft. Born in 1862, Kephart spent most of his life living in the Mountains of North Carolina in Hazel Creek, which today is part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.


He wrote of his experiences in a series of articles in the magazine Field and Stream. These articles were collected into his first book, *Camping and Woodcraft*, which was first published in 1906. While mostly a manual of living outdoors, Kephart interspersed his philosophy and thoughts about what it meant to be an outdoorsman, and to this day his books and writings are still used and studied by people like myself.


Taking a look at the original Kephart knife, manufactured by Colclesser Brothers of Eldorado, Pennsylvania, the inspiration for the PR4 can be seen. ESEE, however, were not the first to take inspiration from this no nonsense classic, and I’m sure they wont be the last. ## MKM and the Normar

MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. MKM is a consortium representing knife-makers from around the world with their headquarters in Maniago, Italy. [MKM](kato://content/migrated_pageid_943) has a range of knife companies working under their name, from LionSteel and Viper to Fox and Mercury, and each company has its own specialty. They have therefore created a large collection, with something for everyone. MKM has slipjoints and gentleman’s knives, as well as tactical fixed knives and EDC pocket knives. All made from the best materials and finished according to the Italian standard.

Jesper Voxnaes, whom I mentioned in the intro, was the mind behind the shape and style of this beauty. For those who may not be familiar with Jesper: he is a Danish knife maker with an impressive list of clients including the excellent GiantMouse Knives, as well as Böker, Spyderco, CRKT and Helle. Jesper is probably one of the most trusted in the industry right now, and his fingerprints are all over this knife. When discussing Vox with Knivesandtools, they pointed out some style features of Vox’ previous work that is also evident in the Normar: ‘... especially the handle, [which] is very recognizable as a Vox design. Check out a GiantMouse GMF2, for instance.’
