There are two versions of the Sebenza 31: the small Sebenza and the large Sebenza. Both were made from top-quality materials such as titanium and S35VN steel. There is much variation within the Sebenza collection. This tube is located in between both scales and around the pivot. Because the tube is as thick and the blade and washers combined, the blade will always be centred and move smoothly. Chris Reeve produced the first handmade Sebenza in 1987. Throughout the years the design changed quite often. After the handmade Sebenzas in 1987 there was the original Sebenza in 1990, the Regular in 1996 and the Classic in 2000. In 2008 the Sebenza celebrated its 21st birthday. To celebrate Chris Reeve introduced another new version of the Sebenza. It was called the Sebenza 21! After the 21 the Sebenza 25 was introduced, but the 21 was the standard for years. Until 2019, when Chris Reeve introduced the new Sebenza. An upgraded version of the Sebenza 21 with a couple innovative modifications amongst which a new type of framelock and an updated inlay.

### The Chris Reeve Mnandi: the blade 

The blade is made from CPM S45VN steel, an American steel that made its debut in the Mnandi in 2021. Compared to S35VN, S45VN is slightly better when it comes to sharpness retention, and it is also easier to sharpen. 

 

With a little practice, the Mnandi can be opened one-handed with the help of the cut-out in the blade. At first, though, it's probably best to open the knife with two hands. When opened, the blade is locked in place by a frame lock. The blade-to-handle ratio stands out. The Sheepdog features a hefty blade, making the knife resemble a cleaver. In spite of its size, the knife has a smooth action and opens with the flipper. The models that do not have a flipper, feature a thumb hole for opening instead. 

The Kizer Sheepdog is one of the most popular models from Kizer, and different models are available. There's a Mini version, for example, as well as an XL version. The Mini has a blade size of 6.9 cm compared to a 10 cm blade on the XL.

## Why the bar was raised so high


‘Chris Reeve is leaving [Chris Reeve Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_329)’. For many knife enthusiasts this was one of the most shocking news reports in 2016. After all, it is no secret that Chris Reeve completely changed the knife world as we know it. Chris Reeve invented many things. Think, for instance, of the integral lock, also known as the framelock. Or what about CPM S35VN steel, a stainless type of steel developed in cooperation with Crucible Steel Company. Today almost any knife manufacturer uses the framelock and CPM S35VN steel for their production knives. Many experts claim that both the steel and the lock are absolute perfection. It is definitely for a reason that the Chris Reeve Knives are for many the ultimate knives. 


It is also why Chris Reeve’s departure came as such as shock. What does this mean for the company? What will happen with Chris Reeve Knives? Fortunately Anne Reeve, Chris’ ex-wife was the answer. With her son, Tim Reeve, she took over Chris Reeve Knives. This, however, still left many with a lot of unanswered questions. After all, the brain behind CRK just left. Could we still expect the same innovative features and quality that put CRK on the map?


You can imagine the surprise at the Blade Show 2018, when Chris Reeve Knives introduced the Impinda. A cooperation between Chris Reeve Knives and the incredibly popular knife maker and designer William (Bill) Harsey.

## WE Knife Double Helix 815


Let’s start with the basics:


* Blade length: 8.4 cm
* Total length: 19.8 cm
* Weight: 130 grams
* Type of steel: CPM S35VN
* Handle material: titanium


In terms of size we could say that the Double Helix is a ‘medium-sized’ pocket knife. Large enough to have enough grip even with large hands, but not that large that you might have difficulty controlling it. A good EDC pocket knife, but because of the top-quality finish and the remarkable mechanism it could also function as a gentleman’s knife, even though it might be a tad too large for that.


## Slide Lock


The most remarkable aspect of the WE Knife Double Helix is its lock. This special mechanism is located on the outside, and responsible for the name of the pocket knife. On both sides of the handle you can spot a titanium curl. This is a spring that presses a steel bar against the back of the blade. This patented ‘Slide Lock’ has never been seen before.  It might remind you of other locking mechanisms because a steel bar is pushed right into the back of the blade. But that is where the comparisons end. After all, the fact that the spring is located on the outside of the handle is unique.

### New inlays


The Sebenza 31 with inlays is also slightly different from the 21 with inlays. The shape is completely different. Even though the new design didn't completely appear out of thin air. It might remind you of the Regular Annual Sebenza's which were introduced 10-15 years ago. These knives had similar inlays.


### New type of Damascus


Until recently all damasteel Sebenza's were made from Devin Thomas-damascus. Now that he is retiring Chris Reeve Knives started looking for a maker who produced the same quality of American damasteel. Fortunately they didn't have to look far and found Chad Nichols: the modern damast master. As of now all Sebenza's enhanced with a damasteel blade are made from Chad Nichols Damascus in patterns called Raindrop, Ladder and Boomerang. At the end of 2019 we expect be selling these models as well.


## What stays the same?


These are a couple of changes, but the vast majority of the knife stays the same. The blades, for instance, are still made from CPM S35VN steel and the handles from 6AL4V titanium. In addition, the remarkable pivot-construction with the bushing-system stays the same. Spyderco Reveal Volume 6! In this online reveal Spyderco introduces the newest knives for the coming year. Not a lot of new designs this time, but a couple of old acquaintances, enhanced with new types of steel and colours. ## CPM S45VN steel vs CPM S30V and CPM S35VN


It is quite a substantial change on a production scale. But the differences between these types of steel is not that substantial at all. CPM S45VN steel is a little stronger and more corrosion resistant than S30V. With similar sharpness retention. Compared to S35VN, S45VN retains its sharpness better and the steel is more corrosion resistant.


## Step by step


This upgrade is done step by step per version of the Paramilitary 2 and Para 3. We change the specs as soon as the model is updated as well. As such you will always be the first to know! It is unclear what this means for all other Spyderco knives enhanced with CPM S30V steel.


## I own a knife enhanced with CPM S30V steel. Now what?


This doesn't mean that your favourite CPM S30V steel knife has become outdated! In fact: it means that your knife has become even more unique! The difference is hardly visible without comparing both types of steel at the same time. It is simply a logical step within Spyderco's famous C.Q.I.

Spyderco replaces the CPM S30V steel from the Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 for CPM S45VN steel

In 2020 [ESEE surprised the world](kato://content/migrated_topic_589) with new 3D handles for the best selling line of knives. Even more surprising was their choice for a new steel: S35VN. Bushcraft enthusiast Padraig Croke put the new [ESEE 3 in S35VN](kato://product/EE-3PM35V-001) and the [ESEE 6 with 3D handle scales](kato://product/EE-6PB-011) to the test.


## Breaking the Mould

Truly tried and tested, and known for their utilitarian tools, their no nonsense warranty service, and their use of simple but effective materials, [ESEE](kato://content/migrated_pageid_356) are the quintessential made in the USA knife company. They have firmly established their place on the belts of law enforcement officers, military personnel and survival enthusiasts. I think a lot of this reputation comes down to the quality control they are known for. When you use the same steels and the same materials for your blades, I bet you become pretty familiar with the nuances of those materials. But this doesn’t mean that they have rested on their laurels, and they are constantly looking at new markets to tap into. New ways to get their knives into the hands of people that need a reliable tool. Their Camp-Lore series for example, which launched a few years ago, saw them looking to classic knife shapes to bring us tools more suited to bushcraft and woodcraft uses. The two staples in this range were the JG5, inspired by the legendary woodsman Nessmuk and designed by James Gibson, and the PR4, designed by Patrick Rollins and takes inspiration from Horace Kephart. ESEE have their ear close to the ground, interacting with users of their blades and listening to what people want, and with this new range, they have branched out into entirely new materials and production methods. The two blades I had the pleasure of looking at were the new ESEE 3 in CPM S35VN steel and the ESEE 6, both with 3D milled scales. Whether you are already the proud owner of either of the originals, or you are on the market for a new blade, I believe there is something for everyone in here with these new choices. So let’s take a closer look at what the differences are, as well as some advantages and disadvantages on the table.

## So what's new?

The blade is still 6.35 mm thick and runs throughout the entire handle. However, the BK72's blade is made from CPM S35VN steel instead of the standard 1095 carbon steel. CPM S35VN has been a fixture in the knife world for many years. It is incredibly stainless, retains its sharpness well and is easy to sharpen. A great type of steel that is still very much appreciated among knife makers after all these years. The comfortable handle has also seen a change; the scales are made from black micarta, a composite material from linen and synthetic resin. It’s nicely lightweight and very grippy, even in wet circumstances. Quite an upgrade from the standard plastic scales!

The KA-BAR is available in two versions:

* The first version 'KABK72' features a cool, stonewashed blade finish, black micarta scales and even the hardware features the tough-looking stonewashed finish.
* The second version 'KABK72BK' features a sleek, black DLC coating, black micarta scales and even the hardware features the black DLC coating.

The Mnandi is a fancy pocket knife. Enhanced with premium materials and ridiculously good finishes. Compact, but it has definitely been a pillar in the Chris Reeve Knives range for years. The ultimate grail knife for many knife enthusiasts. 

 

After the introduction of the improved Sebenza 31 it was only a matter of time before the Mnandi was up next. Overall the new Mnandi is the same as its predecessor. The difference, however, can be found in the blade. It is now made from brand-new CPM S45VN steel. Compared to S35VN, S45VN is slightly better when it comes to sharpness retention, and it is also easier to sharpen. With it the Mnandi is one of the first knives in the world enhanced with this steel. Chris Reeve Knives also updated the nail nick. This is now a thumb hole. Completely cut out. Instead of partially cut out like its predecessor. As such opening the knife with either one or two hands becomes a lot easier. Also, dirt can no longer accumulate in the nail nick. As such the Mnandi will maintain its clean look and feel.

One of the biggest changes is the ergonomic improvement of the handle. The handle now features a subtle curve, providing a more comfortable grip during prolonged use. Arguably, it looks even better than the original too!

### Upgraded materials

The Chapter 2 uses high-quality materials such as titanium for the handle and CPM S35VN steel for the blade. The Chapter 2 is therefore of even better quality, making it a more durable knife.

### Premium features

The updated version has an improved framelock with a steel lockbar insert. This makes the knife safer to carry and use in various situations. It also features ceramic ball bearings.

Ben Petersen designed the WE Knife Banter Wharncliffe with Black Burlap Micarta scales as a knife that you can also easily use for woodworking tasks. It is the result of the straight Wharncliffe edge. This knife is enhanced with all classic Banter features such as the, for this edition bronze anodized, titanium thumb stud and the deep carry pocket clip which allows you to carry the knife on the left and right. The blade is made from S35VN steel and the lockbar of the liner lock was extended to make sure it is easier to use. A fun EDC pocket knife like we have grown accustomed to from Ben Petersen. Cool!

The knife industry in China is booming! Every year new brands enter the world of knives. [Kansept](kato://category/kanseptknives), for instance, which opened its doors in 2020. We recently added Kansept to our range! But what type of knife brand is Kansept Knives?

## Who is Kansept?
The brand was founded in 2020 by Kim Ning: former production manager and designer of Kizer Knives. Like many other Chinese knife brands Kansept Knives is located in the knife Mecca of China: Yangjiang. The brand has dozens of years of experience in the knife industry. They only work with the best and most talented craftsmen and have their own Research & Development department.

## Innovative knives with a vision for the future.
The name 'Kansept' is derived from the word 'concept'. The basis of every knife. Kansept looks at the future. They follow the latest trends in the field of materials and pioneer the newest production methods. All to make sure they can produce the best of the best. Their motto is therefore, not surprisingly so: "We don't just make knives, We make knives better".

## The Kizer Yorkie


Another cooperation with Ray Laconico is the new Kizer Yorkie. A fun and small pocket knife with a blade length of approximately 6.5 cm. Kizer selected CPM S35VN steel for this pocket knife. A good type of steel that won't let you down. The handle is made from titanium and enhanced with a decorative round cut-out. Because of its size this knife will only weigh 83 grams. Combine all specs and you will quickly realize that this is a perfect pocket knife for daily use! We expect to be able to sell the Yorkie in two colours. The grey version with a cut-out in the handle, and a blue anodized version without the hole.

## Design 
Designing a fixed-blade knife offered more freedom than a folding knife. Without a pivot system, Ben could experiment with the ratio between handle and blade, resulting in a comfortable 3.5-finger grip. The addition of a brass booster bead to the lanyard allows for a 4-finger grip, providing extra control. 
The brass bead was inspired by the Rocketdyne F-1 rocket engine that launched the Saturn V into space. It’s a tribute to the engineers and technologies that brought humanity to the Moon – a fitting link to the spirit of the Lander series. 

## Simple design, easy to customize 
The Lander 4 is available in two options: Moondust Micarta with 14C28N steel and a drop-point blade for versatile cutting, or the Black Sheep with S35VN steel and a sheepsfoot blade for precision tasks. 
The Micarta handle offers a secure grip and is attached with two screws. As is typical of Knafs, the handle scales are easy to swap. Knafs provides a file to create custom scales, allowing users to modify, mix or completely redesign them. Whether you choose a unique colour or a brand-new pattern, the possibilities are endless.

The blade of the ESEE 4 is made from 4.6-mm thick 1095 carbon steel, with a full-tang construction. The ESEE 4 features a 4.1-inch blade, which is what the 4 in the name stands for. The blade has a large recess, so you can position your index finger close to the sharp edge. Initially, the handle scales were flat to make the knife easy to carry. The knife comes with a plastic sheath. When it turned out that this knife was a fan favourite, ESEE back to the drawing board to make it even better. Following user feedback on the handle and steel grade, ESEE developed 3D handles and an ESEE 4 in S35VN steel. 

Some people were a huge fan of the finger choil, others were not and even ground it off. And that's why ESEE released the ESEE 4 HM: Handle Modified. They later applied this same principle to the [ESEE 3](kato://category/esee3serie) and the [ESEE 6](kato://category/esee6serie). 

## Reliable steel types
ESEE uses a variety of steel types but most commonly applies 1095 steel. This steel is hardened to 57 HRC, making it tough and less prone to breakage. And since it's not incredibly hard, you could even sharpen it with a rock you found in the river, if your resources are limited. 1095 steel is a type of carbon steel that is tough and easy to sharpen in the field. This ensures that you can trust the knife to keep functioning until you are out of the high-stakes situation. 

Besides the usual 1095 steel, the ESEE 4 is also available in S35VN steel. This is a stainless steel type with an even better sharpness retention. ESEE listened to their fanbase and thus included S35VN steel in their range. ESEE states that this steel type is a great, with properties that make it very suitable for general and everyday use, but perhaps less so for survival situations. For that, it just lacks that toughness of 1095-carbon steel, a factor that ESEE itself values highly when choosing a steel to rely on. It largely depends, then, on what you are going to use the knife for, which type of steel suits you. The version with S35VN steel is hardened to 60 HRC, allowing you to sharpen it to higher levels of sharpness than 1095 steel. It retains its sharpness well and is very corrosion resistant. The higher HRC means the steel is slightly less tough and more susceptible to breaking than the 1095-steel version. 

## Reliable handle materials
When you're in a survival situation, your knife needs to be comfortable to use. That's why ESEE only uses high-quality, reliable materials that feel great in hand. Like G10, a composite material made from synthetic resin and glass fibres. Or choose micarta, a composite made from linen or canvas and synthetic resin. Both of these materials are resistant to wear and tear, as well as moisture and impact.

The original ESEE 4 is equipped with flat handle scales that might not be very comfortable with prolonged use, but that are fine for short-term use for survival tasks. For those who prefer more comfort during prolonged use, ESEE released a line of ESEE 4 knives with rounded, 3D-milled handles. Feels great and looks amazing.

## Reliable sheaths 
When you're in a survival situation the best knife to carry is the knife you have on you. That's why a robust sheath is essential. You'll need a sheath that holds up under pressure, that you can carry in different ways. . That's why the ESEE 4 includes a simple, plastic sheath that can be attached to your gear in different ways. For example, with a belt clip to your belt or with a piece of paracord to MOLLE webbing. Another reason why plastic was chosen is that it is reliable and dries quickly, which prevents your knife from rusting. 

Does that mean that every ESEE knife comes with a plastic sheath? Absolutely not!
