The Naniwa Chosera 5000 whetstone uses magnesia as binder for the abrasive, in this case white aluminium oxide.  

  


The Chosera stones do not soak up any water so the stones do not need to be sprinkled with water frequently. This makes Chosera stones rather easy to sharpen with. Because of their hardness you will not cut into the stone easily and sharpening with these stones will take less time. Their hardness make them a good choice for knives made from hard steel.  
  


Splash with water before and during sharpening, do not soak or store in water.  
  

**About grit sizes**  

Whetstones come in various grit sizes. The higher the number, the finer the grit. A finer grit results in a sharper knife. Sharpening a really dull knife on a fine grit will take much time, so you will need to treat it on a coarser grit first.  
  



* 120 - 600: Appropriate when real dull knives need to be brought back in the right shape

* 800 - 1,000: Appropriate to sharpen knives that were already in a reasonable state

* 2,000 - 3,000: For a result sharper than most knives are when they leave the factory

* 5,000 - 12,000: To polish the knife and get a razor sharp edge



**Remarks pertaining to Chosera sharpening stones**  

During manufacture, Chosera sharpening stones are bound with magnesium. This superior production method guarantees superb results. However, these magnesium-bound stones are more prone to developing hairline cracks. To prevent this from occurring, it is important NOT to use too much water when wetting Chosera sharpening stones. So Chosera stones should NEVER be left to soak in water for a prolonged period of time! It is also important to dry these stones thoroughly after use and store them in a dry, dark place.

als alleen het beste goed genoeg is dan moet je deze hebben

Ik besloot de Naniwa supersteen 5000 te vervangen door de Chosera van dezelfde grit. Het minder snel moeten vlakken en naar mijn bescheiden mening prettiger en sneller slijpen zorgt dat de meerprijs voor deze versie het zeker waard is. Zeer snelle steen met goede feedback! (mijn progressie bestaat uit de Chosera's 1K - 3K - 5K en 10K)

Deze steen gekocht in een set van 400, 1000, 3000 en 5000. Door gebruik van meerdere stenen gaat het slijpen sneller. De stenen zijn hard en je ziet het slijpsel al snel van je mes komen. Prima aankoop.

Uit de complete serie Naniwa Chosera stenen vanaf korrel 400 tot 10000 is deze 5000 een beetje anders dan de rest.
Deze steen is merkbaar een stuk zachter en hij heeft duidelijk dorst, het water verdwijnt snel van het oppervlak.
Bij het slijpen van messen oppassen dus omdat vrij gemakkelijk in de steen gesneden kan worden.
Buiten dit om gaat het slijpen zelf goed, de steen slijpt het snijvlak van een goed voorgelepen mes tot een spiegelend resultaat.
Deze steen gebruik ik persoonlijk niet om keuken of zakmessen mee te slijpen, naar mijn idee is hij daar te gevoelig voor.
Zelf gebruik ik hem als slijpsteen voor het slijpen van open scheermessen waar hij zeer goed tot zijn recht komt.

Degelijk product. Voldoet volkomen aan mijn verwachtingen. Onmisbaar als laatste afwerking. Misschien nog een 10.000?
