My cousin a wine buyer opened an old bottle with an expensive corkscrew that looks like a nutcracker and sure enough it tore the old cork to pieces. I don’t think that would happen using this corkscrew. It’s twice what I’ve paid before for a waiter’s friend, but it really works well. The distance between the screw and lever arm (though it’s a fixed arm, not flexible two part) seems just right. There is a lot of control over opening and I find it effortless. I have a waiter’s friend with a flexible arm and walnut handle, which while prettier, is not as good. Someone else said that the serrated blade tears foil, but I haven’t found that. Perhaps the blade could be sharper for less likelihood of tearing (if that matters). Sharpen the blade Wusthof! Then you would have a perfect corkscrew.

Bought as a present. This is without question the best corkscrew. No fiddling with the old fashioned one with its 2stage operation, just insert the corkscrew and in one easy movement out comes the cork. Slightly expensive but well worth it. I've had mine for over 25 years and it's still works perfectly.
