## The start of the multi-tool


Ever since the eighties Leatherman has been producing multi-tools. Founder Tim Leatherman noticed during a road trip through Europe that he could do a lot with his Swiss pocket knife, but that it was missing a pair of pliers. Years have passed since that moment and today the name 'Leatherman' is synonymous with the term 'multi-tool'.


Victorinox might not have invented the multi-tool but they know damn well how to make this type of tool. Ever since 1884 Victorinox has been producing the famous Swiss pocket knives with many different moving parts, all with the famous Swiss precision. ## The history of Leatherman


At the end of the seventies and the start of the eighties Tim Leatherman and his wife were travelling through Europe in an old Fiat. On the road he used a pocket knife to fix his car and anything that needed fixing in the hotel rooms they stayed at. Every single time, however, he was confronted with the same thing: the pocket knife didn't have pliers. The engineer in him started thinking about a design and not long after he introduced the first prototype of the multi-tool we know today. A salient detail is that Leatherman offered his idea to practically all knife and tool companies. All famous brands. No one wanted to have it. So he just decided to develop the tool with his brother in law and establish a company around it: Leatherman. The father of the modern multi-tool.

## History of Leatherman 
When the American Timothy Leatherman went travelling around Europe with his girlfriend in the 1980s, they bought a Fiat 500 in the Netherlands. During this trip, Leatherman regularly used his pocket knife to make repairs to the car. He noticed that he would also like to have a full-sized pair of pliers at hand for some tasks. This is how the idea was born to combine a pair of pliers with a pocket knife, creating a multi-tool with a pair of pliers as its main tool. Back in the US, Timothy immediately started working on a prototype, which took 3 years. 

By 1983, Timothy Leatherman released his first multi-tool: the Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool). This was the first multi-tool built around a full-sized pair of pliers. This marked the beginning of what would later grow into a successful and iconic brand. The PST was followed by dozens of models, including the Charge+ TTi, with improved designs and more features every time. Even after all these years, this is still one of Leatherman's best designs.

No. When we look at the amount of returns and warranty cases, there is not one tool that stands out when compared to the number of tools sold. At best we can say that the Gerber Center-Drive isn't affected by rust as quickly because of the different finish on the surface. That is something that does occasionally occur with the Leatherman Wave Plus. Especially in coastal areas with their salty sea air, but that is something you can, of course, prevent with proper maintenance.

## One-handed opening pliers

Practical about the Gerber Center Drive is the fact that it has pliers you can easily open with one hand. By pressing a button on the side of the tool you can easily make the pliers appear from the handle. Great when you need one hand to hold onto a ladder, for instance.
