In 2020 there are immediately three new releases in the Silver Class - Professional Grade. The knives released are called the [Spartan Alala](kato://product/USSBSL004BKBK), [Spartan Damysus](kato://product/USSBSL003BKBK) and [Spartan Machai](kato://product/USSBSL002BKBK). Three decent fixed knives made from 1095 Cro Van carbon steel and a handle made from canvas micarta. You can clearly see that Spartan Blades designer Curtis Iovito left his mark on these knives. KA-BAR can be recognized by  the type of steel used and the finish. The sheaths are made from plastic instead of kydex, but still have the appreciated Spartan carrying options. With prices between 169 and 219 euros these knives are not that cheap, but also not as expensive as the knives from the Gold Class.

The overall feeling I got when I first handled the T6 I would liken to one of my favourite survival blades… the [Ka-Bar BK2](kato://product/KABK2), arguably one of the most affordable and well designed survival knives out there. In the case of the T6, you’re working with slightly more steel than the BK2, with about 2 mm extra height and 2.5 cm in length. However, the T6 is slightly thinner and lighter, making it feel a little more elegant in the hand. The two feel very alike in any case, except for the price tag… with the T6 being double the price of a stock BK2! However, after upgrading to micarta scales and a proper kydex sheath, they end up around the same price.

Horace Kephart has gone down in history as legend of the outdoors and is seen by some to be the grandfather of modern bushcraft. Born in 1862, Kephart spent most of his life living in the Mountains of North Carolina in Hazel Creek, which today is part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.


He wrote of his experiences in a series of articles in the magazine Field and Stream. These articles were collected into his first book, *Camping and Woodcraft*, which was first published in 1906. While mostly a manual of living outdoors, Kephart interspersed his philosophy and thoughts about what it meant to be an outdoorsman, and to this day his books and writings are still used and studied by people like myself.


Taking a look at the original Kephart knife, manufactured by Colclesser Brothers of Eldorado, Pennsylvania, the inspiration for the PR4 can be seen. ESEE, however, were not the first to take inspiration from this no nonsense classic, and I’m sure they wont be the last. PKS, Condor and [KA-BAR](kato://product/KABK62) all have versions of this style in their range.


The PR4 is different than the others. Rather than replicate the original, ESEE decided to go against the grain, and inject some of their own personality, making this a beautifully modern take on the original.

## The Specs and Steel


The steel is a laminate cobalt steel (CoS) center and 420J2 (a steel used in the making of surgical implements due to its sharpness) on the outer layers. The result is a knife that will have an extremely sharp cutting edge and a tough-as-nails core.


With an overall length of 249mm, of which is a blade of 132mm long and 6mm thick, the S1X’s blade is hefty! By comparison, a KA-BAR Becker BK2 is 270mm long with a blade 133mm and 6.6 mm thick. Surprisingly, the length and thickness are actually quite similar when you’re talking working steel. However, I feel that there are a number of factors at play with the Fällkniven that adds a certain finesse and attention to detail, not to mention the steel quality. This creates somewhat of a distance between it and other survival blades on the market, usually made from 1095 steel.
