Zero Tolerance knives are designed by Ken Onion, among others, in collaboration with Strider Knives. They are manufactured entirely in the United States. ## The handle on a Mizuno axe


The handles are made from the Japanese white oak and scorched. As a result the outside is sealed and the handle protected from the influences of the weather. The handles are ergonomically shaped and just below the handle you can find a subtle cut-out for your index finger. As a result the axe feels great in hand and is perfect for the more detailed cutting jobs.


## The head on a Mizuno axe


The laminated steel axe head is comprised of 3 layers of steel (Warikomi). The middle of the edge is made from 0.45% carbon steel. The steel around it is a lot softer. As a result you have a very hard cutting edge and a softer edge to catch the blow. The head of the axe had been adorned with Japanese markings. The design refers to Kumadori of Kabuki, a very traditional type of Japanese dance. The letter underneath the mark is an ancient Japanese mark called ‘Mizuno’. On both sides of the axe head you will find stripes. They looks remarkable, but also have a specific meaning. The seven stripes represent the eight mountains, but the eighth is not mentioned as it can cause bad luck.

## Leatherman MUT EOD accessories

There are different versions of the Leatherman MUT: the Leatherman MUT and the MUT EOD. The latter is enhanced with a different tool on the outside: a C4 punch. You **cannot** interchange the tools between the normal MUT and EOD. You namely won't have enough room to close the tool.

## Maxpedition Entity: top-quality for all


On the inside the Maxpedition Entity bags are enhanced with the same functions you might already have come across in the other collections. On the outside, however, a couple of substantial differences can be found when compared to the others. For instance, the casing of the Maxpedition Entity is made from charcoal grey 500D Nylon with a polyurethane coating. This gives the bags their top-quality, pleasing look.

Le Creuset pans are cast in cast-iron. To this day, these pans are still produced in France. For each individual pan they make a casting mold from sand. This mold is filled with cast-iron. ## Copper pan maintenance


To keep a Prima Matera pan in great shape it does take a little maintenance. You have to polish the outside of the pan regularly with [copper polish](kato://product/DEB4200.01N). HThis way you will keep the beautiful copper colour. After use, clean the pan with water and a mild detergent. When there is still food sticking to the bottom surface, fill the pan with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid and leave it out for a few hours. Afterwards, clean the pan with a scouring pad. To prevent rust we strongly advise against using the dishwasher!

## Rite in the Rain waterproof notebooks


[Rite in the Rain](kato://content/migrated_pageid_635) has made waterproof notebooks in many different sizes and colours. The paper is nearly indestructible and practically doesn’t age. The coating makes sure the paper is waterproof. This means that any writing tools that work with aqueous ink hardly or do not impact the paper at all. Our advice is to combine the notebook with a pencil or all-weather pen. If the coating deteriorates the paper might still get wet. Unlike synthetically or polyester coated paper you can recycle this type of paper. Great when you need to use it underwater, outside when it is wet or in humid surroundings such as swimming pools and greenhouses. Use a pencil or an all-weather pen and you will never lose your notes again!


## Modestone waterproof notebooks


[Modestone's](kato://content/migrated_pageid_616) story began when important notes written down by establisher Kalle were destroyed by water while he was serving in the Finnish army. The idea for a waterproof notebook soon emerged. Key was finding the right materials. The notebooks are made from 80% CaCo3 (calcium carbonate, limestone) and 20% HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). As such you no longer need a special coating to make the product waterproof. This unique formula has led to nearly indestructible, oil and waterproof paper which even works when you are not using a pen. You can namely also write on it using an object containing metal.

## Features of Yaxell Ketu kitchen knives

The blade of the Yaxell Ketu knife consists of three layers. Two layers of stainless steel on the outside, enveloping a core of SG2 powdered steel. This is a very hard steel with a hardness of as much as 63 HRC! As such, you can sharpen the knife to razor-sharpness. The blade has a hammered finish. In Japanese, this finish is called Tsuchime. It is a traditional and artisanal Japanese finish originally created by the blacksmith's hammer. The handle is made from pakkawood. ## Lids

A lid ensures that the heat stays inside the pan. As such your water will come to the boil faster, and your dish will stay warm longer as well. In addition, a lid ensures that the moisture falls back inside the pan. Perfect when preparing a stew. We have glass lids, stainless steel lids and cast iron lids. There is something for everyone!

When finding a lid, always make sure you check the diameter of your pan. Make sure it is the same as the diameter of the lid. We always measure the outer rim when finding the diameter of a pan or lid. Choose, if possible, a lid from the same brand as your pan.

## Copper pans: maintenance

To make sure the copper pan stays in great shape you need to maintain it. Regularly clean the outside of the pan with copper polish. As such you maintain the stunning copper colour. A bit of TLC goes a long way. We do not recommend cleaning the cast iron pan in a dishwasher. With a cleaner you can remove stains, dirt and heat stains. In addition, cleaner will preserve the glossy finish. Cast iron pans are made to last a lifetime, but do need to be maintained once in a while.

When a pan becomes too hot the outside of it can discolour. With a stainless steel maintenance polish you can easily clean your stainless steel pans, making them look like new. ## Light-weight pans for on the road


Taking a cooking set with you without it taking up too much room: it is possible. A camping pan is different from a regular pan because of the clever innovations to make sure the pan is as small and manageable as possible. There are, for instance, pans with a foldable handle or a set of pans that neatly fits together. ## Cast-iron frying pans


A cast-iron frying pan is also called a skillet. These pans can directly be placed over an open flame but are also great on other heat sources. ## Dutch Ovens


A Dutch Oven is a cast-iron pan with which you can do just about anything. This applies both to the methods of preparation and the heat sources for which this pan is suited. Use the pan in the oven, on the BBQ or even over an open flame. A Dutch oven without feet can also easily be used on the stove. Do, however, keep in mind that a Dutch Oven with feet won’t work on an induction hob. You can use it to bake, fry, stew roast and grill. ## Casseroles with a special lid


Staub’s casseroles are enhanced with a special lid. On the inside of this flat contoured lid you will find little spikes shaped like drops. When you are cooking the moisture will fall back into the pan via these spikes. Because they are so evenly distributed over the surface of the lid the moisture will also evenly fall back into the pan, instead of dripping down via the rim of the pan. As a result over 9 times as much moisture returns via the middle of the pan giving your dish additional flavour. Because of the weight of the lid which perfectly seals off the pan at least 10% extra moisture will not escape the pan!


Staub has raised the edge of the lid on the outside so you can place ice cubes on it. You can do this to speed up the condensation process. While cooking, you can also put your utensils on top of it which is really convenient. The button on the lid is resistant to temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius, so it can go inside the oven as well!


## Grill pans for delicious meals


In addition to casseroles Staub sells grill pans made from solid cast iron. A heavy-weight material which evenly distributes, and retains the heat. The pans can be used on any type of heat source, you can even pop it in the oven. In addition, changing the heat source is not a problem. Ideal when you want to keep your dish warm in the oven (if it fits at least). The Staub grill pans come in many different shapes, colours and sizes. There are even pans with different handles and different grips that enable you to take hold of the pan with two hands. There are also pans that have been enhanced with a pouring rim. The great benefit of this rim is that you can easily get rid of the excess moisture and grease without spilling. As such you will always choose the pan that suits your every need.


## Majolica-email: shiny, intense deep colours


Using the so-called majolica-email technique, Staub creates a deep intense email colour with a high gloss. Each pan is covered with three layers of enamel. The first is a base coating which covers the cast iron. The second layer gives the pan the desired colour and the last layer provides the high gloss with contrasting nuances.


## The production process


The molten cast-iron is poured in a sand mould. Each mould is used only once so every pan is truly unique. Excess cast-iron and other imperfections are removed after the pan comes out of the mould. After that the pan is prepared for the email layers. After applying the layers the pan goes inside an 800 degrees Celsius oven for 30 minutes. The result is a rock-solid pan that will last for generations!

Better and more exclusive materials make the knives more expensive. A Byrd knife is often priced between 30 and 60 euros. With occasional outliers. While Spyderco knives often start at 50 euros and can go up to 250 euros for the standard models.	 Sprint Runs can go up to 350 euros and the more exclusive Spyderco knives are often listed at 500/600 euros.

### Range:

Even in terms of range there is a difference. As we are writing this versus we offer 30 Byrd knives on our website and 260 Spyderco knives. And that's not counting the Spyderco kitchen knives we also sell. Quite a difference.

Spyderco achieves this number by producing many different versions of a popular model. Not only in terms of colour and handle material. Also in terms of types of steel and sometimes even locking mechanisms. Spyderco also produces knives for specific target groups. Take the [Salt-serie](kato://category/spydercosaltserie), for instance, for maritime use. So the chances of finding the right Spyderco knife are also much higher than with Byrd. Byrd Knives also doesn't produce Sprint Runs and Limited Editions.

I will begin with a short introduction after which I will take a closer look at the light itself. After looking at all the options we get on our bicycles to find out how much light this compact bicycle light produces, and we also look at an equivalent. ## **Unboxing**


The BC25R is wrapped in a shiny 'hardcase' in the famous colours Fenix has been using for a while now. Most information and special features can immediately be found on the outside, you will definitely not need the manual for that. The good thing about this box is that it won't tear easily like, for instance, a cardboard box, to make sure you even store the light in it if you don't use it for a longer period of time. The light and its holder are neatly clicked in the plastic holder, but the accessories and included documents sort of 'roam' around in the box. Because the light is made from one piece, spare parts are not included: only the necessary charging cable and some mounting rubbers are included. In addition to a multi-lingual manual and a warranty card. Not excessive, but exactly what we need.

Let’s start with the basics:

In terms of size we could say that the Double Helix is a ‘medium-sized’ pocket knife. Large enough to have enough grip even with large hands, but not that large that you might have difficulty controlling it. A good EDC pocket knife, but because of the top-quality finish and the remarkable mechanism it could also function as a gentleman’s knife, even though it might be a tad too large for that.


## Slide Lock


The most remarkable aspect of the WE Knife Double Helix is its lock. This special mechanism is located on the outside, and responsible for the name of the pocket knife. On both sides of the handle you can spot a titanium curl. This is a spring that presses a steel bar against the back of the blade. This patented ‘Slide Lock’ has never been seen before.  It might remind you of other locking mechanisms because a steel bar is pushed right into the back of the blade. But that is where the comparisons end. After all, the fact that the spring is located on the outside of the handle is unique.

## My first impressions:
In terms of looks the WT16R is an outsider, all in all the WT collection looks nothing like the rest of the Fenix family. In terms of size and dimensions it makes me think of a chocolate bar and, surprisingly so, the weight as well. The design is filled with remarkable details, of which the carrier clip, the diffused lens and the side light stand out. The light is almost completely made from plastic, only the clip, the switch and the magnets are made from metal. And yet the WT16R feels like a decent tool that can handle its own. The battery is built-in and cannot be replaced. In short: a great design for a lightweight light.

## Origin: the birth of an icon
The Spyderco Tenacious was introduced in 2008 and was an important milestone for Spyderco. It was one of the first models to be produced outside the US, in China to be precise. This made it possible to produce a high-quality pocket knife at an affordable price.

## Features of the Tenacious
Here we focus on the original Spyderco Tenacious with 8Cr13MoV steel and G10 handle scales, still one of the most popular versions.

The blade has a leaf shape and a full flat grind. This sharpening ensures low cutting resistance, allowing you to cut through cardboard, food, rope and plastic with ease. With a blade thickness of 3 mm, it is sturdy enough, yet sharp and precise.

## Bring it on: oil in the pan


Pour a couple drops of oil in the pan. Peanut or sunflower oil is best. Spread out the oil with a paper towel and cover the insides of the pan. Make sure you don’t forget the edges! The thinner the layer the better. It is better to apply ten thin layers than one that is too thick.


Oil and fire don’t mix well. So be careful when you apply the oil. Don’t let any of it fall outside of the pan because when you add a gas flame to the pan it could catch fire.


## Fire in the hole!


The time has come to add the heat. Start out with a medium flame but the moment the pan has gotten really hot you can take it up a notch. The aim is to let the oil become so hot it will start to smoke. When it starts to smoke keep the heat up. After all, the goal is to end up with a black pan. Don’t forget to turn on your hood: this part of the process might smell a bit.


Let it smoke for a couple of minutes and you will notice that the pan will dry up. If it has turn off the heat. Now leave it to cool for fifteen minutes (or longer). Afterwards clean it with a brush and some hot water. **Never use detergent!** Never! When you are done cleaning the pan dry it with a towel.


## Round two


Once again rub some oil on the insides of the pan and heat it until the oil has dried. Repeat this process until the pan turns black. After about five times you will notice that you are nearly, but not quite yet, there. Your meat will stick to the surface of the pan and will need a minute to release itself, however, afterwards the pan will be great! After approximately ten times you will have reached the best results. The blacker the pan the better the non-stick coating.


De Buyer indicated that the non-stick coating will become even better when you, (especially at first) bake a lot of red meat. When you do the non-stick coating will become even more stable.

It is also possible to season a pan in the oven. Place the pan bottom up on the second grill with a piece of aluminium foil on the first grill below for the excess oil. Let the pan season for an hour at the temperature at which the oil evaporates. This is usually around 200 degrees Celsius, but depends on the oil used. We recommend an oil with a high smoke point. After this, let the pan cool down. Repeat this process 1 to 2 times.


## Watch out for acids


When you cook using acidic foods they can damage the seasoning. Think of white wine, tomato (sauce) and lemon. After preparing your dish you will notice lighter stains in the coating of your pan. Simply season your pan again and your non-stick coating will be good as new. No Teflon coating can compete with that!

## What do you need to pay attention to when purchasing outdoor binoculars?


### Magnification factor of the pair


To properly spot birds and animals it is best if you choose binoculars with a 8 or 10 magnification. A magnification larger than 10 will leave you with a very narrow field of view and an image that is difficult to keep stable. Binoculars with a magnification smaller than 8 will, obviously, not bring the image close enough.


### Waterproof binoculars


You, of course, take a pair of binoculars outside, if you want to look for remarkable animals, even when it rains. Let's say you take the binoculars with you on a holiday to a tropical rain forest where the humidity is high. It is then not practical if the image becomes cloudy because of moisture. For that reason it is important that a pair is waterproof. The binoculars filled with nitrogen or argon are already waterproof because otherwise they would lose their gas filling. Maxpedition: The versatility of an EDC pouch

In the early nineties the Swedish air force was looking for a knife that would suit jet fighter pilots. Not that they could do much harm a couple thousand feet up in the air, but even jet fighter pilots could end up in survival situations. For that reason the Fällkniven F1 was 'recruited' in 1995 as the official survival knife for the Swedish pilots of the Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet.


They carry the Fällkniven F1 in a simplified plastic sheath in a nylon bag that can be attached to the pilots' trousers on the outside of the thigh. As such they always have it close without it getting in the way in the cramped cockpit. The idea is that the pilot, after an emergency, can escape the cockpit by using the ejection seat and, after landing, can use the Fällkniven F1 to rescue themself.

## What do you use a serrated knife for?


Serrated knives are mostly used to cut products with a hard outside and a softer inside. A baguette is probably the first thing you think of right now. But also other types of bread, cakes and pies can best be cut with a serrated knife. The same applies to pizzas – if you don’t have a pizza cutter, which is also serrated. Or think about pineapples: you won’t easily cut through it by using a plain edge knife.


Serrated knives are also perfect when cutting ‘sponge-like’ vegetables, such as tomatoes. There are also special tomato knives which are sometimes also called sausage knives. A piece of dried sausage is easy to cut with a serrated knife. But there are, probably many more examples of foods that can be cut with this type of knife. The most important question, however, is: why do you use a serrated knife for these tasks instead of a plain edge knife?


## Why is a serrated knife sometimes more suited than a plain edge knife?


The main advantage of a serrated knife is that you don’t have to apply too much pressure when cutting. The serrations, after all, do the work for you. By moving the knife back and forth it will automatically dig itself further in the product until it has reached the base. As a result the cutting technique is very different then when you, for instance, ‘rock’ a chef’s knife. With a serrated knife you won’t be able to immediately cut through a product. In exchange, however, you get a lot a more grip, which is key when cutting the abovementioned products.


Ever tried to cut a tomato with an average peeling knife? Especially when you are not using a razor-sharp knife you will quickly squish the tomato. You will lose the juices inside and it is dangerous. You are inclined to apply more pressure and when the knife slips you can really hurt yourself. However, if you use a serrated knife the shape of the tomato will remain intact enabling you to cut nice, even slices.
