The Spartan Harsey Difensa is a large pocket knife, designed by knife legend William (Bill) Harsey. This model saw the light of day after a request from a Canadian Spec Ops unit that was looking for a solid knife. This unit and Harsey joined forces and came up with this amazing knife. The name Difensa comes from the battle fought by Canadian and American troops in Italy during the Second World War.
The large full-tang blade is made from CPM S35VN steel. An incredibly good type of steel that was once developed in cooperation with knife maker Chris Reeve. S35VN retains its sharpness well and is also corrosion-resistant. It is no coincidence that Harsey is also the person with whom Chris Reeve designed the Green Beret models. The similarities are striking.
The handle is made from 3D milled micarta. This is a rock-solid material, made from linen and synthetic resin. The way Harsey added subtle contours and facets is very impressive. You will find a finger groove in between the handle and the blade. You can put your index finger in it for the more detailed tasks.
The Spartan Harsey Difensa comes in a very good MOLLE compatible sheath. The inside of the plastic insert is enhanced with a layer of plush textile to prevent rattling and scratches. The sheath can also be used for other fixed knives and is therefore a welcome addition to any knife collection. It is great that it was designed for both left and right-handed use.
