## How to choose the best survival knife 

### Survival knife: steel type 

The first choice to make is the type of steel you're looking for. Do you prefer a blade that is easy to sharpen? One that is stainless? Or rather one made from really tough (but not stainless) carbon steel? Carbon steel, in general, doesn't retain its sharpness as long as stainless steel. However, carbon steel is easy to sharpen, so that shouldn't be a problem. It's incredibly tough and can handle its own. Then there are hybrid steels like D2, which is relatively corrosion resistant but still very tough. 

In short; it depends on your intended use and personal preferences. 

### Survival knife: handle 

The handle should be comfortable to hold and offer enough grip in a variety of circumstances. G10 is a commonly used handle material; it's strong and lightweight. Micarta is strong and lightweight too. It differs from G10 in the way it becomes even more grippy when wet. Rubber is by far the best material in wet conditions. The disadvantage of rubber is that it's not very heat-resistant. 

Natural materials like horn or wood are stunning, but less suited for survival knives as they're not equipped to handle extreme changes in weather. 

### Survival knife: blade shapes 

The most commonly used blade shape is the drop-point shape. A survival knife with drop-point blade is a true all-rounder, from processing game to building a shelter; it can handle it all. The clip-point blade shape is another popular option, which you might recognise from bowie knives. This shape is optimised for processing game. The spear-point and tanto blade shapes are great piercers. The spear-point is more suitable for general cutting tasks than the tanto. 

### Size of the blade 

Survival knives come in many shapes and sizes. There are survival knives with blades of only 10 cm in length, to miniature swords. Which outdoor knife should I choose? A smaller outdoor knife will be perfect for more precise cutting tasks like woodcarving or making feathersticks. Moreover, smaller survival knives are usually easier to carry. Large survival knives, on the other hand, are great for heavy-duty tasks like batoning or chopping away vegetation as you move through the woods. 

### Serrated or not? 

Survival knives can have a serrated edge, a plain edge or a partially serrated edge. A serrated edge is ideal for cutting through tough materials like rope. Think, for example, of knives designed for pilots, capable of cutting through seat belts or even the relatively thin metal of a cockpit. Serrated blades usually retain their sharpness longer than a plain-edged blade. They are also more suitable to use as an impromptu saw, for example. 

### Survival knife sheath 

Sheaths for survival knives are often made of plastic, kydex, nylon or leather. Plastic sheaths are a usually included with more affordable survival knives. It's water-resistant and easy to clean. Kydex is a great material that is low-maintenance, water-resistant and durable. Nylon is lightweight, resistant to different climates but not very wear resistant. Leather is a stunning natural material, of course, but it's susceptible to wet or too dry conditions. That's why leather will require a bit more maintenance than other materials.

## Reasons to buy a Rambo knife 

Are you Silvester Stallone's biggest fan? Do you love the Rambo films and did the knife leave a lasting impression on you? Then take a closer look at a Rambo knife. The knife comes in 2 versions: the Standard and Signature editions. In price, the knives are not very different, but the Signature Edition has Sylvester Stallone's signature, and a unique serial number engraved in the blade.

## History and evolution of the Rambo knife 

### Rambo: First Blood (1982) 

The Rambo knife of the first two films was based on the Randall 18, a survival knife carried by pilots during the Vietnam War. This handle accommodates that same practical survival kit. Fishing lures, needles, thread, a small surgical knife and matches; the pilot had all the necessities to survive. All he had to do was unscrew the cap from the handle. 

 

### Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) 

In the second part ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II’, the Rambo knife barely changed. The sharpening tool in the sheath changed from rectangular whetstone to a small metal sharpening steel. In addition, they changed the colour of the knife and sheath. The distinctive Bowie shape remained unchanged. 

 

### Rambo III (1988) 

The knife from Rambo 3 no longer has a survival kit and sharpening tool. In addition, the knife has fewer serrations on the spine. They are also flatter than previous models. It has a slightly more stylish, less robust look. The handle is not wrapped in nylon, but made of wood. It also offers better ergonomics than you might think. John Rambo undoubtedly had more grip and power as a result! 

 

### Rambo IV (2008) 

John Rambo decides to forge his own knife in the fourth film. The legendary Bowie knife gave way to a jet-black machete. An extremely impressive knife to behold! On the Signature Edition, the engravings are in nice contrast to the dark coating.

## About SOG Knives
During the Vietnam War, members of the special unit MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Studies and Observations Group) were equipped with a special combat knife for covert missions. In 1986, designer Spencer Frazer used this knife as inspiration for his SOG Bowie. The popularity of this knife was huge and SOG Specialty Knives was born. Our first favourite is the breathtakingly beautiful Spyderco [SwayBack](kato://product/SPC249TIP). A knife many Spyderco fans have been waiting for, for years. To the disappointment of many fans the knife was never announced. It is therefore really surprising to see that the SwayBack was introduced at the 2020 Shot Show. This really says it all: In 2020 the Swayback will be available to all. The SwayBack is a traditional swayback-style knife with a modern look and feel. Designed by the famous Marcin Slysz, who also designed the Slysz Bowie, Spydiechef and Techno 1 and 2. With the introduction of the SwayBack Spyderco has made the wishes of many Spyderco fans come true.

## CJRB Pyrite
The CJRB Pyrite is a practical, mid-sized EDC knife that offers great value for money. The button lock mechanism makes this knife user-friendly, and due to its popularity, various versions are available to suit everyone’s preferences. ## How did this collaboration between Spyderco and yourself come to be? 

Every year, Spyderco hosts the Amsterdam Meet. This is usually right before the IWA Outdoor show, when they're already travelling from the USA to Germany, which is where the IWA is held. The Spyderco Meet is a meet-up for knife enthusiasts and Spyderco, where they present the latest production models and prototypes not normally shown to the wider public.    It was at one of these Meets, in 2018, that I gave my design and concept to Eric Glesser. Eric Glesser is the son of Spyderco's founder Sal Glesser. At the time, my design was only two pieces of cardboard glued together, shaped like the knife I envisioned. It was simply meant to give an impression of the size and ergonomics. In late 2019, I unexpectedly received an email that Spyderco had made two 'working' prototypes of the design. Fast-forward five years to 2023 and the Spyderco Stok was born!   

## We know you're a big fan of Spyderco's pocket knives, so why did you choose to design a fixed knife? 

I designed the Spyderco Stok in 2018, shortly before I started working at Knivesandtools. At the time, I was in art school and looking for a fixed blade for everyday use. When you are finger-deep in paint, constantly opening packages, a fixed blade shines in its simplicity and accessibility. A fixed knife requires less maintenance than a pocket knife with hinged parts where dirt, paint and tape residue can get stuck inside the mechanism. That's why I chose to design a fixed knife.   

## The Spyderco Stok is available with a bowie blade and drop point blade. Why did you choose these blade shapes? 

Most fixed knives were too large for me, or unsuitable for an urban environment. As a knife enthusiast and Spyderco collector, I asked myself the question: what would the perfect fixed blade Spyderco knife look like to me? With that in mind, I designed the Stok.
