# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. ## Which Ochsenkopf axe will suit me best?


Choosing the right axe depends on the height of the user. A taller and stronger person is better equipped to handle a heavy axe with a long handle than a smaller person. A universal felling axe can be used to cut down trees and to cleave wood. If you want to split wood that is filled with knots it is best to use an, as heavy as possible, splitting axe. Are you only looking for an axe to split simple logs it is best to use a lighter splitting axe with a head shaped like a wedge.


Some of the Ochsenkopf axes are enhanced with a sleeve that protects the handle. This sleeve protects the handle from damage if you miss. But that is not all. Due to the additional weight of approximately 300 grams the head side of the axe is heavier. As such you will have a greater impact force compared to an axe which hasn't been enhanced with a protective sleeve, especially when you use the lighter Spalt-Fix axes.


To hit wedges the Big Ox-splitting axe is perfect. The head of this axe has a large impact surface at the back and the steel sleeve protects the handle from damages underneath the head.


## Ochsenkopf axe head: hollow grind


The head on the Ochsenkopf splitting axes are enhanced with a hollow grind. Optically speaking this might not look sharp, but the splitting results are great. Because the cutting surface retains its sharpness a lot longer you don't have to sharpen the head that often. This extends the life of your axe and saves you time and money. 

Ochsenkopf axes: Which materials? Ochsenkopf-axes are mostly made from C60-steel. This steel is characterized by its toughness and long life. Only top-quality types of wood are used to produce the handles: hickory and ash wood. These types of wood are tough and won't easily crack. Perfect to absorb blows without breaking.

The right maintenance extends the life of your axe. For that reason you should always correctly store your tools. A storage place that is too dry will dry out the handle. However, a storage place that is too humid will make the handle swell which could, in time, damage the fibres of the wood. If you are planning to store your axe for a longer period of time it is wise to protect the cutting surface from rust. All you have to do is apply a little bit of oil or fat on the cutting surface. Afterwards protect the edge with, for instance, a sheath and you are good to go.

## The handle on a Mizuno axe


The handles are made from the Japanese white oak and scorched. As a result the outside is sealed and the handle protected from the influences of the weather. The handles are ergonomically shaped and just below the handle you can find a subtle cut-out for your index finger. As a result the axe feels great in hand and is perfect for the more detailed cutting jobs.


## The head on a Mizuno axe


The laminated steel axe head is comprised of 3 layers of steel (Warikomi). The middle of the edge is made from 0.45% carbon steel. The steel around it is a lot softer. As a result you have a very hard cutting edge and a softer edge to catch the blow. The head of the axe had been adorned with Japanese markings. The design refers to Kumadori of Kabuki, a very traditional type of Japanese dance. The letter underneath the mark is an ancient Japanese mark called ‘Mizuno’. On both sides of the axe head you will find stripes. They looks remarkable, but also have a specific meaning. The seven stripes represent the eight mountains, but the eighth is not mentioned as it can cause bad luck.

## Plastic handles


Almost all Fiskars axes are equipped with a plastic handle. This fibreglass reinforced plastic is called FiberComp by Fiskars. The axe head is integrated in the handle and will never become loose. Also, breaking of the handle is a thing of the past. Fiskars axes come with a 25-year warranty.


## PTFE coated axe head

The Gerber Bushcraft axe and hatchet models are an interesting hybrid, floating somewhere between the functionality and practicality of a traditional Fiskars style axe, something we’ve seen before from Gerber, but with the ‘tacticool’ aesthetic choices we’ve come to expect from their knives. What I wanted to know was whether this was a high quality axe with a cool paint job, or just a bells and whistles attempt to build a product no one asked for. For years, we have been convinced of the quality of [Hultafors axes](kato://category/hultaforsbrand). But how are they made? We weren't actually sure either. That is why, in October 2022, we visited Hults Bruk in Åby, Sweden, to see with our own eyes how these axes are made.

## History of Hults Bruk

The story begins around 1697 in Hults Bruk, Sweden. Here, nails were forged for the shipbuilding industry. The location of the forge relative to the Lake Ågelsjön, with the Hultån stream flowing into the valley from there, was ideal for the water-powered hammers that were used to forge.

[Roselli](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1227) is a Finnish company that has been producing quality axes and knives for the past 40 years. The company was born, like many of the best knife companies, through a need to create something that was otherwise not available. Heimo Roselli grew up in rural Finland and started creating his own tools, perfecting his blacksmith skills and finding a balance between hardness and flexibility in his steel. He needed tools suitable for fishing, hunting and carpentry around the farm. On their website, they give a little insight into this process, but do not give too much away, in typical Finnish style; keeping their cards close to their chest.

Fast-forward to today, Roselli has established itself as a company renowned for their beautiful tools, with their puukkos and axes crafted in a traditional Finnish style. I have not had the pleasure of owning a [Roselli knife](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1244) (yet!) but I did have the opportunity to get to grips with their short handled axe. The first thing that struck me about Roselli’s axe range is their lack of model types. To some this could be frustrating, however, I believe this lends credence to their philosophy of creating simple tools that provide the user with a multifunctional and versatile tool. So let’s dive into the details.


## The Axe Head


This carbon steel axe has a HRC of about 60 and measures 350mm all in. The head itself is very thick! One of the chunkiest I have used in an axe of this size, with about 90% of the steel being found in front of the eye rather than on the butt end. The back of the head is built with a small swell for hammering duties. The thickness and the angle of the cheeks has a double use in that it prevents the axe from getting stuck and lends to a very wide wedge for splitting. It also carries a lot of weight needed to deliver effective splitting action. This is very important, especially considering how short the handle of this axe is. I found this an interesting style that I had not used before and I found the weight to be very evenly distributed. Initially, when I saw how little material existed at the butt end, I was a little sceptical. However, this shape really works!

You need to maintain an axe is you want to enjoy it for years to come. But how much maintenance does an axe need? Maintenance is comprised of two parts: sharpening the head int ime and maintaining the handle. In this topic we will tell y ou how to maintain the handle of your axe.

Most handles are enhanced with a layer of linseed oil in the factory. If you really consider your axe to be simple tool the handle will last a couple of years. Maintenance, however, will make sure that the handle will last a lifetime.

## Simple maintenance

In addition to keeping it dry and clean it is important to occasionally rub oil over the handle and mainly the eye (the place where the handle is secured in the head, see [anatomy of an axe](kato://content/migrated_topic_612)). Once a year will do the trick. This will prevent the handle from wearing out or tearing because it is too dry.

## Type of axe

When splitting larger pieces of wood you use a [splitting hammer or splitting axe](kato://content/migrated_pageid_826). These axes are a lot heavier and push the block apart. These axes are not razor-sharp. You use a splitting hammer if you also use a metal wedge as you split wood. You recognize a splitting hammer from its thicker casing and hammer-like back. As such this axe can handle quite a lot. Any other axe is not meant to be used when hitting metal. Because of the hard blows the axe could be damaged. As such you should never use another axe as a wedge.

The [Fiskars Norden axes](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1049) were one of the most impressive releases of 2019. But are these axes really that good? Bushcraft expert Siegurd van Leusen found out and wrote this expert review. For this review he used the [Fiskars Norden N10 felling axe](kato://product/F1051143).


## First impressions


Fiskars is mostly known for its characteristic, orange-black, with glass-fibre reinforced plastic FiberComp handle. For the Norden N10, however, Fiskars opted for a wooden look and feel. Great, because I don't think any axe enthusiast will love the plastic look. You read it well: love. It is not the most important aspect, of course, but the eye wants something too. The axe looks chic, which is mostly the result of the wooden handle in combination with the carbon steel axe head and the steel ring in between the head and the handle.


When it comes to strength and durability, you need a Fiskars axe. During the chopping courses we teach, we always explain that if you are looking for an axe that requires little to no maintenance, it is best to purchase a Fiskars axe. Unbreakable, indestructible and easy. Nothing can beat a Fiskars.


But with the launch of the Norden collection, Fiskars introduces a handle that is partly made from hickory wood. When I held the axe for the first time I was immediately enthusiastic. I did, however, also immediately wonder: how's the handle holding up if I use it? I love wooden handles - that is an understatement - but I also care about sustainability.


Wood is stunning, but let's be frank: how many handles did I have to replace in the past? Every year I organize dozens of lumber clinics for people who have no experience when it comes to chopping wood, so axes regularly break due to misuse.


In short: wood is beautiful, but also vulnerable. Especially if you don't know how to handle it. The Norden collection, however, is unique. The handle namely consists of one part hickory wood and one part FiberComp. We will test it to find out how this works.


Thanks to the FiberComp construction the axe head is integrated in the handle and will therefore not let go. A FiberComp handle absorbs vibrations and increases the grip and the comfort as you use the axe. The glass-fibre reinforced plastic FiberComp handle of a Fiskars axe is stronger than a handle that is merely made from wood. A wooden handle will break, with a FiberComp handle you can keep going.

You can split smaller pieces of wood to produce kindling. You need dead and dry wood for this purpose because it will burn a lot better than fresh wood. The following techniques are also mostly used during hikes or when spending time on the campsite. As you are traveling you don't need large pieces of fresh wood. You need smaller pieces of dry wood. ## The best type of axe to make kindling

For splitting small wood, a [hand axe](kato://category/handbijlen), [camping axe](kato://category/kampeerbijlen), small [chopping/felling axe](kato://category/hakbijlen), [forest/bushcraft axe](kato://category/bushcraftaxes) or trekking axe is ideal. The smaller the handle the less efficient the axe. An axe about the length of your forearm is perfect!

You can also use a [log splitter](kato://category/firewoodsplitters). With such a splitter, you split the wood without needing an axe. It’s very safe and easy!

## The different ways to safely split wood to small pieces

### 1: On a large chopping block.

The first method is the most straightforward. Use the same chopping block that you previously used to split large pieces of wood. However, for finer chopping work, you will need to kneel down. This is important because the handle of a trekking axe is shorter than that of a splitting axe. If you miss, the axe head will land on the chopping block or the ground instead of hitting your leg or foot.

Place the wood you want to split at the back of the chopping block. This way, the axe will hit the block if you miss the log. Kneel in front of the chopping block and grip the axe firmly at the end of the handle. Gently place the cutting edge of the axe on the chopping block; this helps you gauge the correct distance and prevents you from overshooting the block, which could break the handle. Never use your hand to hold the wood while splitting! Many fingers have been lost this way.

How to: make kindling

As a bushcraft enthusiast I think it is important to use top-quality tools. I need to be able to rely on my axes, saws and knives. But weight is also key. Especially if I need to walk a long way to my camp. When I held the Hultafors Hultan Trekking axe for the first time there was only one thing I could think: this is a match made in heaven.
