## History of Spyderco

One of the most important individuals in the knife world is Sal Glesser. In 1967, he founded Spyderco with his wife Gail. In 1981 the first Spyderco pocket knife was produced, the C01 Worker. This knife stood out because of the round hole in the blade. Specifically made to open the knife with one hand. This hole, also called the Spydiehole, is still one of the most important features on a Spyderco knife.

It all started in a small van. In this van, they drove through the States to sell their products. Nowadays, Spyderco works with factories all over the world: China, Japan, Taiwan, Italy and, of course, their own factory in America. Often in cooperation with world-famous knife makers and designers. They also supply knives to the U.S. Army and Spyderco is a first choice for many first responders. As such powder steel is popular for use in top-quality knives that retain their sharpness well but are also still relatively easy to sharpen. 

## How good is CPM 3V steel? 
When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is of course relative term. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for CPM 3V? CPM 3V is a tough type of steel. As such the risk of chipping or breaks is a lot lower. The alloying elements add to the good wear resistance. This means that the blade will retain its sharpness for a long time.

## What are the disadvantages of CPM 3V steel? 
With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of CPM 3V in mind. CPM is not stainless. This means the surface can rust if not maintained properly. CPM 3V is highly resistant to wear and tear. This also means that CPM 3V is harder to sharpen. To make your life a little easier when it comes to sharpening 3V, we recommend diamond-coated or ceramic sharpening stones. 

## Which is better? CPM 3V compared to...?

## Features of a Higonokami pocket knife

The construction of a traditional Higonokami is really simple. The handle is made from one piece of usually brass or stainless steel. This has been folded over, which forms the grip scales. This simple but effective construction keeps the price of a Higonokami quite low.

Typically, these knives are not fitted with a lock. The thumb rest (chikiri), and the friction of the hinge screw and handle ensure that the knife stays in the opened position during use. The friction of the handle scales also ensures that the knife does not open when it shouldn't. This type of knife is called a 'friction folder'. ## The history of Higonokami knives

The origins of the Higonokami are intertwined with Japanese history. Towards the end of the samurai era, the samurai lost many of their privileges. Including carrying a sword in public spaces. As a result, many blacksmiths lost their biggest customers and started mass-producing knives. Many of these blacksmiths settled around Miki, a region with many rivers and iron ore sands, and the historic birthplace of the Higonokami.

The name Higonokami is a contraction of 'Higo no Kami'. This means 'lord of Higo' in Japanese; an honorary title for samurai from the Higo region in Japan. In 1899, a knife makers' guild was established in Miki, which established the name 'Higonokami' as a trademark in 1907\. Only members of the guild had the right to produce a Higonokami. At its peak, the guild counted as many as 50 blacksmiths. From carpenters to schoolchildren, everyone in Japan used to carry a Higonokami pocket knife.

The Higonokami has grown into one of the most famous knife designs ever. And it's deeply rooted in knife history. Today, the guild has all but disappeared. There's only one original creator who still produces them: Mr. Motosuke Nagao. You'll recognize his knives by their blue and gold cardboard boxes. According to tradition, he is the only one who is allowed to use the term Higonokami. Nevertheless, there are many other brands using this name. Such as the Japanese brand Ohta. They are just as distinctive!

## Choosing the right Z-Saw for you

When choosing a saw, the specs and choices can seem a little overwhelming at first. But there are a few factors which need to be considered when you are choosing the right saw for your needs. These considerations include the blade's tooth size, length, ergonomics and packability. These elements go for all types of saw brands. What do you need to consider when choosing a saw for your own needs? Let us take a look at some of the specs and break down how they affect your saw choice.

## Tips per inch

One of the biggest deciding factors is blade choice is its TPI (tips per inch). Generally speaking, the fewer teeth per inch on a blade, the larger those teeth tend to be, and the deeper the gullets. This means that with each stroke of the saw, a larger quantity of material is being cut and removed. As a result, a blade with fewer, larger teeth per inch will cut much quicker than one with more teeth. However, because of this aggressive cutting action, there is a greater chance that the material’s fibres will become torn, creating a rough finish. The more teeth per inch, the finer the finishing cut will be. So if making finer cuts is more preferable, for example if you are trimming a spoon blank or working a piece of wood for sloyd, then a blade with more teeth may be more preferable for your needs.

If you are looking for a more aggressive finish in the non-folding saws and power is what you're looking for, then the FS-245 is recommended, with 7 tips per inch. This is comparably more aggressive to the FS-270 with a TPI of 11 which will provide a beautifully smooth finish on your cut.

In the folding range (Tuck-In models) the 210 coarse model will give you a TPI of 8.5, even more aggressive than the FS models. However this blade is shorter and as a result requires more full strokes to get the job done. This would arguably be mitigated by the more aggressive teeth. The 210 fine is also more fine than the FS model, with a TPI of 12, resulting in a beautifully smooth cut, perfect for bushcraft projects that require a level of finesse.

## Blade Kerf

Another consideration when you are choosing your saw type is the blade's kerf. This term is used to describe the thickness of the cut that a blade makes in a piece of wood as it cuts through it. The term is also sometimes used to describe the thickness of the blade, although often the kerf will actually be wider than the blade due to the cutting tips being slightly wider than the blade itself. The wider the kerf, the wider the cut will be. Woodworkers pay attention to kerf width, particularly where accuracy is essential. In our case, looking at pruning and folding saws, perhaps this is not such a critical factor. But it’s worth understanding this element of a saw's cutting blade, as it will affect not just how easy a blade can get through a piece of wood, but how much sawdust and waste is produced as a result of a cut. The thinner a cut, the less wood is wasted, however it will be more difficult to cut as you get deeper into the wood, with less space available for the dust to escape, resulting in a clogged cut that can become difficult. As a rule of thumb, a thicker kerf is preferable for outdoor saws.

In the FS models, the 245 coarse has a blade thickness of 0.90 mm, as well as the 210 course Tuck-in model. This will give you plenty of clearance for your dust to be removed as you are working through a piece of wood. This spec however only becomes important when you are cutting through larger chunks of wood.

# Unique features of the ESEE 4 
## Its design
The blade of the ESEE 4 is made from 4.6-mm thick 1095 carbon steel, with a full-tang construction. The ESEE 4 features a 4.1-inch blade, which is what the 4 in the name stands for. The blade has a large recess, so you can position your index finger close to the sharp edge. Initially, the handle scales were flat to make the knife easy to carry. The knife comes with a plastic sheath. When it turned out that this knife was a fan favourite, ESEE back to the drawing board to make it even better. Following user feedback on the handle and steel grade, ESEE developed 3D handles and an ESEE 4 in S35VN steel. 

Some people were a huge fan of the finger choil, others were not and even ground it off. And that's why ESEE released the ESEE 4 HM: Handle Modified. They later applied this same principle to the [ESEE 3](kato://category/esee3serie) and the [ESEE 6](kato://category/esee6serie). 

## Reliable steel types
ESEE uses a variety of steel types but most commonly applies 1095 steel. This steel is hardened to 57 HRC, making it tough and less prone to breakage. And since it's not incredibly hard, you could even sharpen it with a rock you found in the river, if your resources are limited. 1095 steel is a type of carbon steel that is tough and easy to sharpen in the field. This ensures that you can trust the knife to keep functioning until you are out of the high-stakes situation. 

Besides the usual 1095 steel, the ESEE 4 is also available in S35VN steel. This is a stainless steel type with an even better sharpness retention. ESEE listened to their fanbase and thus included S35VN steel in their range. ESEE states that this steel type is a great, with properties that make it very suitable for general and everyday use, but perhaps less so for survival situations. For that, it just lacks that toughness of 1095-carbon steel, a factor that ESEE itself values highly when choosing a steel to rely on. It largely depends, then, on what you are going to use the knife for, which type of steel suits you. The version with S35VN steel is hardened to 60 HRC, allowing you to sharpen it to higher levels of sharpness than 1095 steel. It retains its sharpness well and is very corrosion resistant. The higher HRC means the steel is slightly less tough and more susceptible to breaking than the 1095-steel version. 

## Reliable handle materials
When you're in a survival situation, your knife needs to be comfortable to use. That's why ESEE only uses high-quality, reliable materials that feel great in hand. Like G10, a composite material made from synthetic resin and glass fibres. Or choose micarta, a composite made from linen or canvas and synthetic resin. Both of these materials are resistant to wear and tear, as well as moisture and impact.

The original ESEE 4 is equipped with flat handle scales that might not be very comfortable with prolonged use, but that are fine for short-term use for survival tasks. For those who prefer more comfort during prolonged use, ESEE released a line of ESEE 4 knives with rounded, 3D-milled handles. Feels great and looks amazing.

## Reliable sheaths 
When you're in a survival situation the best knife to carry is the knife you have on you. That's why a robust sheath is essential. You'll need a sheath that holds up under pressure, that you can carry in different ways. . That's why the ESEE 4 includes a simple, plastic sheath that can be attached to your gear in different ways. For example, with a belt clip to your belt or with a piece of paracord to MOLLE webbing. I have seen this poor knife been put through more misuse and abusive scenarios than any other knife out there. It’s been used to pry open doors, to hammer into a tree and used as a stepladder, to slice up old gas stoves, to baton through rusty iron nails and even cinder blocks.
