Measuring tools will ensure a clean end result, whether you are working with wood, metal or other materials. A spirit level is indispensable to make sure something is perfectly horizontal or vertical. For short, straight distances use a ruler, available in steel, aluminium or plastic depending on the material you are working with. If you want to measure accurately, a caliper, analogue or digital, is the right choice. It allows you to measure inside, outside and depth precisely. For longer lengths, there are tape measures and folding rulers: the tape measure is compact and flexible, while the folding ruler remains firm and straight, which is useful for vertical measurements. To check or mark off angles, use a try square for right angles, a bevel gauge for variable angles between 0° and 180° and a mitre square for fixed angles such as 45°. 


### Marking tools 
Marking tools allow you to machine your workpieces to exact size and shape. A mechanical pencil gives a consistent, sharp line without the need for sharpening, ideal for wood and other smooth surfaces. For marking parallel lines, use a crosscut wood, for example when making wood joints. Even more precise are a marking knife or a kiridashi, with which you do not draw lines but carve them: this creates marks that do not fade and also serve as a guide for your saw or chisel. If you work with hard materials such as metal, then use a scriber pen, which allows you to make thin, permanent lines in the surface.

## Original Higonokami? 

The design is reminiscent of the well-known traditional style of Higonokami knives. The name [Higonokami](kato://category/higobrand) is a contraction of ‘Higo no Kami’. This means 'lord of Higo' in Japanese. An honorary title for samurai from the Higo region in Japan, and also the place where the knives come from. 

 

Strictly speaking, only one producer is allowed to use the term Higonokami. However, we think the Ohta Knives pocket knives are perfectly entitled to bear this name. They are just as distinctive. Made of high-quality steel, finished with beautiful materials and because the knives are handmade in Japan, each knife has the unique character you expect from a Higonokami. ## Simplicity in design and function

Ohta Knives was founded in 1998 by Hiroaki Ohta. This knife maker taught himself how to make knives using nothing more than books and photographs. Ohta Knives produces knives that combine Japanese and Western styles. Hiroaki Ohta's work started with Sheffield-style knives and evolved into traditional western slipjoints when he started selling his knives in America. Now he also makes American slipjoints and his FK series is inspired by the traditional Japanese higonokami, a pocket knife from the 19th century. Ohta received training from Yoshimi Kotoh, a pioneer of modern higonokami knives.

## History of Kai 
Kai was founded in Seki City, Japan. The forests and water sources in and around Seki are what made the town the perfect base for swordsmiths. During the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) a law was implemented prohibiting the samurai from carrying swords. As a result, swordsmiths were forced to convert their sword-making skills to cutlery, kitchen knives and other cutting tools. 
 
Under these circumstances, Saijiro Endo's older brother opened a factory to produce folding knives. Once he finished school, Saijiro started working in the factory. During his eight-year apprenticeship, he learned the craft and got married. At the age of 20, he opened his own small factory in 1908. That's how Kai started out. After the start of World War I, demand for knives dramatically increased. Despite many difficulties, Saijiro persevered in his craft. His hard work paid off. After producing a very popular folding knife, his fame increased, and he became the number one knife manufacturer in Japan.

## Why would you carry a fixed EDC knife?


First of all, a fixed EDC knife won't just close. Incredibly safe, especially when you know you are about to carry out heavy-duty tasks. But also think of maintenance: a pocket knife with moving parts should always be kept clean. This to ensure the function of the lock and the opening mechanism. In dusty surroundings a fixed knife will therefore be the answer. Another reason to carry a *fixed EDC blade* could be the law. In some countries you cannot carry a pocket knife, but are able to carry a fixed knife up to a certain length.


## What makes a fixed knife a suitable EDC knife?


Of course not every knife is great for EDC use, although opinions sometimes differ. We, however, believe that a fixed EDC knife should easily be carried on a daily basis. Later on Pelton also came up with many other designs such as the military DPx HEFT (Hostile Environment Field Tool) and the compact DPx HEAT (Hostile Environment All Purpose Tool). Pelton has secured over 26 patents on DPx’s name.

Robert Young Pelton’s utilitarian lifestyle can also be found in his knives. According to him each part should have at least two functions: typical for a well-thought-out survival strategy. In addition, Pelton always felt the need to innovate which is why he developed a special jimping (small notches cut into the back of the blade) which serves as a wire stripper. The lanyard holes can be used for a piece of paracord, but you can also use it as a screwdriver when you add a screwdriver bit.

Let’s start with a small introductory round. Who is this Joe Caswell? Joe Caswell is a famous American knife maker known for his innovative ideas and top-quality handmade knives. Ever since 1995 Caswell has been a full-time knife maker with quite the fan base. Not that surprising really. When you look at his knives you will be amazed by the interesting mechanisms and remarkable designs. This cooperation with CRKT gives anyone the opportunity to get their hands on a real Caswell design!


## The CRKT Provoke and the Kinematic technology


First things first, what is the Provoke made from? CRKT used D2 steel for the blade, a robust type of steel that retains its sharpness well. It is therefore also great to see that CRKT will use this type of steel a lot more in 2019. As some of you might already know, however, is that D2 is not the most corrosion resistant type of steel. Fortunately CRKT found the perfect solution for that! The blade has been enhanced with a titanium nitride finish to make sure the blade is extra corrosion resistant. This is not only incredibly clever, it makes the knife look incredibly bad-ass. The handle is made from aluminium and weighs next to nothing.


The best aspect of the CRKT Provoke is the Kinematic technology used to open the knife. Normally a karambit is a fixed or folding knife which closes. The Provoke is neither. The blade slides forward when opened. Incredibly innovative! But why select this mechanism in the first place? The humble saw... When it comes to bushcraft and outdoor tools, it’s often seen playing second fiddle to its much cooler older brother, the woodsmans axe. But the world of saws, like most specialist tools, has a plethora of choices and options available, and it could be easy to get caught up in the debates that float around on the forums about which saws are better and why. So, rather than adding to that cloud of debate, it is perhaps more useful to take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of certain types of saws, and why we would choose to carry one type over the other. This article will focus on two types of saw we most commonly find in bushcraft kits, the folding pocket saw ([Silky Gomboy](kato://content/migrated_pageid_819)), and the collapsible bow saw ([Agawa Canyon Boreal 21)](kato://product/AWA2B1C1).

## What are you going to be using your saw for?

For the last few years I have been intermittently switching between both of these saws and I can honestly say that I love both, but for different reasons. They both have their place in the outdoors world, but if you are looking at purchasing a new saw, then there are some factors that need to be understood before making your decision. How wide the gaps are between the teeth, the thickness of the kerf (gap) created by the saws teeth in the wood, and at what angle the teeth are set to (rake) are all elements of a blade that need to be considered, so we can make our choices with a basic understanding of what we need our saw to do.

## Greenwood or Drywood?

The first thing to consider is whether you cut mostly green wood or dry wood. Green wood blades are going to be predominantly used by sloyd and green woodworkers, or people pruning their garden or woodland, whereas drywood blades are for carpentry and joinery, as well as firewood processing and cutting dried logs. A greenwood blade has a much wider set of teeth, combined with a raker after every 4 or so teeth. This raker is designed to remove the greenwood dust and pulp from your saws cut, preventing it from clogging and restricting your cutting. A drywood blade doesn’t need this, and this raker will not be included. The technical elements get a little more detailed than this, and there is a world of nuance in these choices alone. But as a rule of thumb, this would be the first place to start when considering a saw blade.

## Push and Pull

The other main consideration when choosing a blade type is rake style. This is the angle the teeth of the blade are set to, and ultimately will determine whether the blade cuts on the push or the pull of the saws motion when you are using it. A standard bow saw will generally be set at a 30 degree angle on both sides of a tooth, meaning it cuts equally on both the push and the pull motion and allows for you to use it comfortably when your log is on a sawhorse. The downward pressure of a push cut will secure your log to the sawhorse, but a pull cut will slightly lift it. A standard bow saw blade is a jack of all trades type blade, and is not particularly specialised to any one particular use. Then you have a Japanese pull saw, like the Silky Gomboy we are using here, its teeth are set at a much more aggressive angle so as to only make a cut when the user is pulling the blade back towards them. The forward motion should only be skirting across the cut and clearing it of any dust or pulp that would hinder a clean cut. This pull cut motion will make the blade much easier to use at awkward angles or when you are attempting to cut things at a height, applying a cutting pressure into your material with little effort needed. There is also the option of having a curved blade over a straight one, ensuring consistent contact with the material being cut, but we will get into that more once we are discussing the saw.

## Choosing the right Z-Saw for you

When choosing a saw, the specs and choices can seem a little overwhelming at first. But there are a few factors which need to be considered when you are choosing the right saw for your needs. These considerations include the blade's tooth size, length, ergonomics and packability. These elements go for all types of saw brands. What do you need to consider when choosing a saw for your own needs? Let us take a look at some of the specs and break down how they affect your saw choice.

## Tips per inch

One of the biggest deciding factors is blade choice is its TPI (tips per inch). Generally speaking, the fewer teeth per inch on a blade, the larger those teeth tend to be, and the deeper the gullets. This means that with each stroke of the saw, a larger quantity of material is being cut and removed. As a result, a blade with fewer, larger teeth per inch will cut much quicker than one with more teeth. However, because of this aggressive cutting action, there is a greater chance that the material’s fibres will become torn, creating a rough finish. The more teeth per inch, the finer the finishing cut will be. So if making finer cuts is more preferable, for example if you are trimming a spoon blank or working a piece of wood for sloyd, then a blade with more teeth may be more preferable for your needs.

If you are looking for a more aggressive finish in the non-folding saws and power is what you're looking for, then the FS-245 is recommended, with 7 tips per inch. This is comparably more aggressive to the FS-270 with a TPI of 11 which will provide a beautifully smooth finish on your cut.

In the folding range (Tuck-In models) the 210 coarse model will give you a TPI of 8.5, even more aggressive than the FS models. However this blade is shorter and as a result requires more full strokes to get the job done. This would arguably be mitigated by the more aggressive teeth. The 210 fine is also more fine than the FS model, with a TPI of 12, resulting in a beautifully smooth cut, perfect for bushcraft projects that require a level of finesse.

## Blade Kerf

Another consideration when you are choosing your saw type is the blade's kerf. This term is used to describe the thickness of the cut that a blade makes in a piece of wood as it cuts through it. The term is also sometimes used to describe the thickness of the blade, although often the kerf will actually be wider than the blade due to the cutting tips being slightly wider than the blade itself. The wider the kerf, the wider the cut will be. Woodworkers pay attention to kerf width, particularly where accuracy is essential. In our case, looking at pruning and folding saws, perhaps this is not such a critical factor. But it’s worth understanding this element of a saw's cutting blade, as it will affect not just how easy a blade can get through a piece of wood, but how much sawdust and waste is produced as a result of a cut. The thinner a cut, the less wood is wasted, however it will be more difficult to cut as you get deeper into the wood, with less space available for the dust to escape, resulting in a clogged cut that can become difficult. As a rule of thumb, a thicker kerf is preferable for outdoor saws.

In the FS models, the 245 coarse has a blade thickness of 0.90 mm, as well as the 210 course Tuck-in model. This will give you plenty of clearance for your dust to be removed as you are working through a piece of wood. This spec however only becomes important when you are cutting through larger chunks of wood.

## The history of damascus steel
In the past a piece of rough steel was forged into a longer piece. This was folded and forged together again. By repeating this process multiple times one ended up with a piece of steel that was comprised of hundreds, sometimes even thousands of layers. To create damascus steel the steel is heated in a fire. By heating it like this the steel would absorb the carbon from the coals. By repeatedly folding it the carbon was spread out all over the steel. The carbon hardens the steel and leaves behind a finer grain structure. As such the steel can be sharpened even finer. The knives and swords that were made from this type of steel were less prone to break or fold.

The damascus steel was folded so many times because the steel needed to be hardened and refined. This also removed any imperfections. The fact that the steel absorbed the carbon and became even better was accidentally discovered during the process.

## Damascus steel today
Today the process used in the past is no longer necessary to produce top-quality steel. The alloys coming from the steel factories today are a lot better than the old-fashioned damascus steel from the past. It is said that the original way of forging damascus steel in the 19th century was lost, but that is not true. Producing damascus steel, however, did become an art form. Most often two or more different types of steel are used. Types of steel with a different carbon content, for instance. 

The damascus steel is comprised of complex shapes. You can tell when you look at the pictures of the knives on this page. When a damascus steel blade is finished it is often chemically or mechanically processed. As such the layers become even more visible. Afterwards the blade is held in a container of chemicals.

For industrially-produced damascus steel a 'normal' top-quality type of steel such as VG10 or 3G is often forged in between two layers of factory-made damascus steel.	 At that point the damascus steel merely has an ornamental function because the steel that forms the cutting edge is comprised of one layer of monosteel. 

## Origin of 'damast'
When you hear the word 'damascus steel' you might think of the Syrian city of Damascus. This makes sense because the names are very similar. That this type of steel was named after the city is the most accepted theory. Damast is also a weaving technique that was used on silk fabrics. These fabrics came from Damascus and were, like the damascus steel, enhanced with unique patterns.

Also, the term 'damas' in Arabic means 'watered'. When you look at a damascus steel blade you see that it has flowing and water-like patterns. This is also where the name might have come from. As such we cannot say for sure where the name came from.

## Industrial damast
In addition to the very valuable damascus steel that is produced on a smaller scale, mostly by very skilled 'artists', there is also industrially-produced damascus. This is the damascus steel that is often used for kitchen knives and is still affordable. Kitchen knives made from 'real' damascus steel are pricy.

## Is damascus steel better than normal steel?
Despite the fact that damascus steel is much more expensive than normal steel, this is mostly the result of the process that is used to end up with this type of steel. Many people believe that damascus steel is better, but that is actually never really the case. It is mostly about appearance, considering the fact that each knife is unique thanks to the pattern of the damascus steel.

## Damasteel or Damascus Steel?
Is damasteel the same as damascus steel? Simply put: no. Damasteel is a manufacturer of damascus steel. It is the only commercial manufacturer of damasteel, who uses two types of powder steel to produce damasteel. The result is a combination of the best performances with stunning looks. Damasteel is often confused with damascus steel, but it is really different.

What is damascus steel?

You use a [honing steel](kato://category/sharpeningsteels) to make a knife that is already in a good shape, a little sharper. A honing steel is a steel bar with more or less the same hardness as your knife's steel. Move each side of the kitchen knife across the honing steel between 5 and 10 times. This is generally enough to make your kitchen knife ready for use!

## Can you sharpen your knife with a honing steel?

Honing a knife and sharpening a knife are two completely different things. With a honing steel you don't remove any material, you simply ensure the knife's edge remains straight. This will prevent your knife from becoming blunt quickly, and thus you'll delay the need to sharpen your knife. Since the honing steel removes no material, it also does not wear down your knife.
