The DMT Duosharp sharpening stone is a large diamond sharpening stone ideal for sharpening large knives. A part of the sharpening surface has the well-known DMT-circled pattern and a small part that is completely closed. This part can be used to sharpen, for example, small chisels or other small objects without them getting stuck in the holes. Both sides of the sharpening stone are provided with a different grain size.
This sharpening stone is delivered including the plastic base into which the sharpening stone can be fastened. It appears that even a simple plastic clamp can be an ingenious instrument. This holder cannot only be used for sharpening stones with a size of 6, 8 and 10 inch, but the holder itself can also be used in two different ways. The usual way is that the base makes sure that the sharpening stone will not slide away during sharpening. You only have to focus on the sharpening. The bottom of the holder has a handle that you can use when you move the stone towards the object you want to sharpen. For example, think about an axe you clamp into a vice.
Also the DuoSharp sharpening stone uses a colour code to indicate the grain size you use to sharpen with. Although the colour cannot be seen through all of the holes, it is clearly shown on both sides which colour code it concerns. It does not have a sticker attached to the stone but a firmly attached plastic plate that will therefore also remain in place after long-lasting use. Because of these kind of details, DMT distinguishes itself from the competition.
Information about grain size DMT sharpening stones
The grain size of a diamond stone and a water stone cannot be plainly compared. This is due to the fact that the construction and materials used are essentially different. In case of a water stone the sharpening grains are incorporated into the stone. These grains will be loosened from the stone during the sharpening process in the form of a kind of sharpening paste that arises. In case of a diamond stone, the diamonds are tightened into the surface of the stone.
Important to know
You may choose for dry or wet sharpening with the sharpening stones by DMT. The advantage of wet sharpening is that the stone is lubricated and sharpening residues are disposed of. Only use water and never oil if you want to sharpen wet. In addition it is good to know that a diamond sharpening stone has to be used a couple of times in order to obtain the optimum sharpening result. The operation of a new sharpening stone is a little too coarse. Only after 5 to 10 knives the stone will obtain its definitive working.
