The WE Knife Synergy2 is a stunning knife with a remarkable story. To understand how the Synergy2 first saw the light of day we need to go back in time. In 1999 Jim O'Young designed the first version of the Synergy with the brand SpeedTech. The concept for this design is the result of a challenge Jim O'Young had presented to himself. The challenge was to design a 3D object with intriguing curves in SolidWorks, a design program which, back in the day, didn't have as much 3D options as modern programs have today. At the same time it was a way for O'Young to get to know the program better and test its limits.
Not only in terms of design the Synergy was a ground-breaking knife. The locking mechanism and the construction of the knife were also considered to be very innovative in 1999. The Synergy1, for instance, had a buttonlock lock and an integral handle made from one piece of aluminium. Combined this resulted into the 'Most Innovative American Design Award' at the 1999 Blade Show. A remarkable award and quite the honour.
Despite the success only 200 pieces of the Synergy1 were produced. This changed when Jim O'Young came into contact with WE Knife. The result? The Synergy2! On many levels similar to the Synergy1, but with the design style, finishes, choice of material and amazing production quality of WE Knife. As such the Synergy2 is a tribute to that special knife from 1999.
Like the Synergy1 the Synergy2 has an integral handle. WE Knife, however, selected titanium instead of aluminium. The way WE Knife designed the handle is definitely worth mentioning. This is not only amazingly carried out, because the middle of the handle is slightly thicker it nicely fills the palm of your hand. This version of the Synergy2 is very special. The handle is enhanced with, what WE Knife calls, a marble blue finish. This is a marble pattern that emerges by heating titanium with a blowtorch. Another great detail is that the artistic pocket clip, like the handle, is made from one piece of titanium.
This knife has a trailing point-style blade shape and is made from M390 steel. A premium type of steel for a premium knife such as the Synergy2. The knife opens easily with the flipper and is locked by a solid framelock. This framelock is enhanced with a steel lockbar insert that prevents wear and tear in the long run. Like the rest of the handle this lockbar insert is nicely rounded.
In short, the Synergy2 is one of the most remarkable knives ever to be produced by WE Knife. It is unique to hear how this knife came to be and how WE Knife made it its own!
