Originally, this collection consisted of fixed blades designed for military personnel and other professionals as part of Benchmade's Black Class line, though nowadays there are folding knife versions available as well. The Civivi Baby Banter is a compact and practical EDC knife, designed by Ben Petersen. In the pocket knife community Ben is also known as @ben_banters with his saying 'What iiiiisss up guys!' The Baby Banter is the smaller version of the WE Knife Banter. Petersen designed this version of the Banter as a pocket knife that shouldn't look like any other pocket knife. People asked him why he didn't release that unique knife. By popular demand, there is now also a smaller version of the Banter: this Civivi Baby Banter.

Ever since the 16th century, Coutellerie Nontronnaise has been producing pocket knives in the French village of Nontron. That makes Nontron the oldest, still existing knife brand in France. Like before, these knives are still produced by hand. The distinctive feature of a Nontron knife is the inverted V symbol burnt into the wooden handle by pyrography. The reversed V is an old and mysterious symbol of which the origin is unknown. Regardless of the historical meaning, the charm of a Nontron knife is absolutely timeless!

The pocket knives from this collection are knives with intriguing computer generated graphics that are only available in that specific year. If the year is over they are discontinued. This makes them real collector's items! But that is not all. Chris Reeve Knives surprised the knife world in 2018 with the new Impinda. A cooperation with knife maker and designer Bill Harsey. This ground-breaking modern slipjoint, with an innovative slipjoint mechanism, definitely appealed to us as Europeans. At the Shot Show we got the opportunity to take a closer look at the Impinda and the new CGG models with Tim Reeve, and to learn more about the story behind these remarkable knives.

In some ways an incredibly simple knife, in all its perfection. Maintaining the Sebenza, however, is slightly different from other pocket knives. We will tell you how to do it.

The Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 is a icon in the knife world. As a knife manufacturer you handle such a showpiece with great care. And yet there was that announcement in June of 2019: the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31! We would love to tell you more about what changes and what it means for the Sebenza 21.


## Chris Reeve Sebenza 31: the innovations


As the name might already suggest the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 is an update of the Sebenza 21. This also means that it isn't a completely new model. Only an update with some important changes when compared to the 21.


### Ceramic lockbar interface


Okay this might sound difficult, but it really isn't. The Sebenza 21 is enhanced with a hardened titanium lockbar which immediately closes on the back of the blade to lock it. New for the 31 is that a ceramic ball was pressed into the end of the lockbar. This ball serves as a detent ball and 'lockbar insert' at the same time. Ceramic is harder than titanium and will therefore not wear out as quickly. It will also move better when it comes into contact with steel.

This system is not completely new. The Inkosi and Umnumzaam were already enhanced with this system. It is a lot more sustainable than that of the 21 and therefore an improvement. Characterizing for Chris Reeve Knives is that they always carefully think about these types of innovations. Decisions are not made overnight. Still one of the strengths of this rock-solid brand.

## How do you sharpen hedge shears?

Sharpening always starts with good preparation. Clean the knives first, how to do this is explained later in this article. Check the blade for any damage. Depending on the state of the blade, decide whether you will sharpen by hand, or whether an electric sharpener is needed for heavier work.

## What types of hedge shears exist?

There are different types of hedge shears, and that also determines how best to sharpen them:

* **Sharpening regular hedge shears**: The easiest way to do this is as above, using a sharpening stone or file. 
* **Electric hedge shears**: These often have a lot of small serrations, or teeth. Sharpen the teeth, one by one with a file or flat small sharpening stone.

## Which sharpening tools are recommended for hedge shears?
For most hedge shears, a sharpening stone with a medium/coarse grit size will be sufficient. Preferably choose a compact sharpening stone that fits well in your hand, so you can move along the edge in a controlled way. A good example is the [Skerper Pocket Stone](kato://product/SVSO003). 

An alternative is an electric knife sharpener, such as the [Work Sharp Ken Onion 2](kato://product/WSKTS-KO2-I) This is especially useful if your hedge shears are very dull, you have a lot of hedge hears to sharpen or just want quick results.

**Please note**: hedge shears don't need the same level of sharpness as kitchen knives. A course to medium grit size (for example, 200 to 600 grit) will usually be sufficient. This will remove burrs and damage fairly quickly.

Large knife shows such as the Shot Show were cancelled. That is why, this year, many product launches are hosted online. [Benchmade](kato://content/migrated_pageid_282) joined the party with a large list of new knives for the new year. Mostly new versions of their most popular models. Like the Bugout, Mini Bugout and the new Mini Osborne!

At the 2019 Shot Show we saw a lot of amazing stands. A brand that really stood out, however, was [Kizer](kato://content/migrated_pageid_403). The brand installed a beautiful light box with prints of their most popular pocket knives. The light from this box definitely highlighted all the new models they brought with them. This was great because we were curious to learn more! Our conclusion after the show? 2019 will be an amazing year for Kizer.


## The Kizer Gemini 2.0: new handle materials!


Anyone who has heard of Kizer has also heard of the Gemini. An incredibly cool and affordable pocket knife made from top-quality materials, designed by Ray Laconico. Considering the popularity of the Gemini Kizer decided to introduce more versions of the handle. At the 2019 Shot Show they had three versions for us to admire. One with brown canvas micarta, one with carbon fibre and one with cross-cut carbon fibre. This means that the carbon fibre was cut out in such a way that you are left with a wood grain pattern, instead of the standard woven pattern. Which will it be? That is not 100% certain yet. Very exciting! All three are stunning.

[Benchmade](kato://content/migrated_pageid_282) also made an appearance at the 2019 Shot Show. With an enormous stand, dozens of employees and multiple new products they definitely wowed the crowds. Upon arrival we were happily welcomed by the Benchmade team and were given the opportunity to take a look at all new pocket knives with Hans Albing, the product line manager at Benchmade. It was an amazing opportunity!


## The Benchmade Griptilian collection got a S30V steel upgrade


Big news! The Benchmade Griptilian collection will get a S30V steel upgrade. Initially Benchmade used 154CM steel. A great type of steel for daily use. S30V steel, however, is a lot more robust, stainless and retains its sharpness longer. Not too bad right? The new Griptilians could become a little more expensive than the 154CM steel version. Fortunately you don't have to worry. According to Benchmade it will only be a minor difference.


## The Benchmade 560-1 Freek


Another famous model which was given an update is the Benchmade Freek. This new version of the Freek has been enhanced with a handle made from grey and black layered G10, instead of the grivory/versaflex handle. The blade also got an upgrade from CPM S30V steel to CPM M4 steel. An incredibly solid and hard type of steel. To add a little colour Benchmade added a thin red G10 liner on the inside of the handle. Red anodized aluminium standoffs keep the handle together. If you are already a fan of the original Freek collection, this robust version is something you will love as well!
