The term HID stands for High Intensity Discharge, or gas emission in plain English. It is a lighting technology where the traditional lamp with the wire in the reflector is replaced with a thick-walled quartz glass tube filled with noble gas and metal salts. Furthermore, a ballast or high tension transformer is used in a HID lamp which provides the necessary arc voltage at the correct voltage. This generates a flame arc between two electrodes in the glass tube, which temporarily makes the metal salts in the noble gas evaporate. As a result, they radiate light. Nitecore buying guide: which flashlight is right for you?

In the early nineties the Swedish air force was looking for a knife that would suit jet fighter pilots. Not that they could do much harm a couple thousand feet up in the air, but even jet fighter pilots could end up in survival situations. There are different types of white light. For instance, you have warm white light, neutral white light and cold white light. Neutral white light is in the middle of the colour spectrum. It has a Kelvin value of 4000\. Warm white light is below that, at about 3000K. Cold white light is around 6000K. Warm white light has a yellowish colour and is often used in living spaces. Neutral white light is whiter than the warm white, but not as cold as the cold white colour. The colour is still slightly yellowish. Cold white light is often compared to daylight. White light is very suitable for weapon lights or powerful flashlights. It is also a good colour to use to illuminate the environment. However, using it does make your own natural night vision worse.

## Blue light

Blue light is very mild. This ensures that your natural night vision is not affected. If you want to read a map at night, blue light is highly suitable. More details and colour differences are visible when you use blue light than when you use red light, for example. Blue light also illuminates traces like blood. This makes this light colour very suitable for investigators, hunters and search & rescue teams.

## Red light

Red light is very suitable because of the way your eyes work. This is because the cones in the eye are sensitive to red light, and the rods are not. As a result, it has less of an impact on night vision. Red light also provides great contrast. This makes details more visible. Red light is therefore a good option for night-time activities.

## Green light

Green light is very soft. Animals react less or not at all to green light. This light also does not attract insects. However, it disturbs natural night vision more than red light. Nevertheless, green light provides many advantages in certain circumstances. Hunters and fishermen often use green light.

## Yellow light

The advantage of yellow light is that you retain the majority of your natural night vision, but you can still distinguish colours. This is the same benefit as both white light and red light.

## Infrared light

Infrared light is not visible to the naked eye and is therefore often used in combination with an infrared viewer. Infrared light is often used as the light on a weapon.

## Ultraviolet light

Ultraviolet flashlights are widely used to verify the authenticity of banknotes and certain gemstones. It's also possible to see invisible traces with this light. These lights are also widely used at dance parties, as the light illuminates fluorescent paints and dyes.

## CRI – Colour Rendering Index

When it comes to light, it's often a question of the CRI, or colour rendering index. This is an important value, as it indicates the strength of the light. This is shown with 'Ra'. Outdoor light has a CRI of 100 Ra. This is the highest achievable value. Artificial lights usually have a slightly lower Ra, so colours don't quite match how they look in normal daylight. Older lights often still have a CRI of 60 Ra. Nowadays, LED lamps more often have a CRI of 80 or even 90 Ra.

## A bit of background

The F1X is the little brother to a range of knives by Fällkniven that come in 3 different sizes, so called the [F1](kato://category/fallknivenf1), [S1](kato://category/fallknivens1) and [A1](kato://category/fallknivena1). The original Fällkniven model F1 has been the official survival knife for pilots in the Swedish Air Force since 1995 giving it the apt name of The Pilots Knife. Most military aviation units issue some kind of survival knife to their pilots in case their aircraft are shot down behind enemy lines and the crew needs tools to facilitate their survival, escape, and rescue. Despite being in service for almost 30 years, the F1 has gone through a number of iterations, with changes and improvements made to the edge geometry, steel choices, handle shape and materials, and sheath styles. It seems they are still making improvements to this unassuming little powerhouse.

## First impressions

I loved the feel of the S1X when I first got it. The weight and chunk of the steel, the tactile and grippy scales, and the slim-ish handle, perfect for using the knife in gloved hands, as it’s designed to be used. The F1X is the same… the same but different. The shorter blade length gives it a beautiful balance in the hand actually, perhaps even more so than I felt with the S. That shorter blade allows me a lot more control and finesse, making the F1X a little more suited to bushcraft uses and nimble knifework. Added to this, the pinpoint swedge construction on the back of the blade allows for really precise work. It allows me to see where my knife's point is going exactly, and less friction reduces the knife's drag and prevents it from getting stuck in things like cans (we’ll get into that later).

## What do you use a gut hook for?
The name already gives it away. The gut hook can be found on hunting knives and is used to gut game. From cutting through fur to removing the intestines. The hollow shape of the gut hook easily gets caught behind the fur after which you open the belly of the animal in one swift move. This is not only fast and efficient, you also make sure the primary edge of the knife does not hit the bone. Thick fur, like that of a deer, for instance, is very tough. A gut hook also ensures that you don't hit the intestines. Because the intestines contain a lot of bacteria that increase decay, you need to make sure you don't damage them.
