The Benchmade Mini-Griptilian 556 S30V is a practical EDC pocket knife, designed by Mel pardue. Since the introduction of the first version many years ago the Benchmade Griptilian is an absolute classic in the knife world. Its ergonomic handle, perfect for left and right-handed use, combined with different openings mechanisms and blade shapes have turned the Griptilian into a legend in the pocket knife world.
This Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian has a droppoint blade. You open it with the double thumb studs after which it is locked by Benchmade's famous Axis-lock. The handle is made from Valox. This is a brand name for a specific type of FRN (glass-reinforced nylon) which feels great in hand, is strong and doesn't weigh too much. In 2019 Benchmade decided to upgrade from 154CM-steel to CPM S30V steel making the Mini-Griptilian even better. CPM S30V is one of the few types of steel that is specifically developed for knives. It retains its sharpness well, and is very corrosion resistant.

Not the nicest example of an axis lock I’ve had, I can’t achieve a drop shut action without blade play. Probably the first Benchmade that this has happened on. With that said though, it’s still a very competent pocket knife and the S30v seems to have been heat treated well. I’ve used it every day for a month and just stropped it a few times to maintain the edge. DLC has held up surprising well also. On the whole it’s a very good knife But mine has a couple of niggles or it would be full marks. I would recommend this if you are looking for a small work knife that can take a bit of a kicking, I don’t mean chopping a tree down but it’ll stand up to anything sensible you throw at it.
