The **Spyderco Gauntlet Premium sharpening** system is a comprehensive sharpening system. It has coarse CBN (cubic boron nitride) and fine ceramic abrasive rods. The spyderco Gauntlet is justifiably one of the most anticipated sharpening systems. All the positive points of its predecessor, the Spyderco Sharpmaker, have been taken into account. However, a number of new innovative changes have been added to the design! 

 ### This set contains:

 * 2x coarse CBN sharpening rods (cubic boron nitride).

 The first thing to notice is the curved hand protector that protects your entire hand during the grinding process. So you don't have to be afraid to slip! The base is made from sprayed plastic which, according to Spyderco, can withstand quite a lot. Furthermore, the Spyderco Gauntlet has a fixed sharpening angle. At least, the rods are always at a fixed angle of 20 degrees per rod. This makes the Spyderco Gauntlet suitable for most knives. However, it is not impossible to use a different sharpening angle. A Japanese kitchen knife, for example, has a much sharper sharpening angle. By holding the knife at a different angle, you can determine the sharpening angle yourself. This, however, will take some getting used to.

 This set comes with coarse CBN rods and fine ceramic rods. The oval shape of the rods ensures that almost all types of blades can be sharpened. Serrated, bent or straight, it's all possible! For serrated knives you use the corners of the sharpening rods and for curved or straight blades you use the wide convex side. The CBN rods can only be used to sharpen very blunt knives or knives of which you want to re-profile the edge. The white ceramic sharpening rods can be used to sharpen knives that are not very blunt. No water, oil or other abrasive is needed during the grinding process!

 ### How to use

 
 * Place the Spyderco Gauntlet on a table or other solid surface. Preferably at hip height.
 * Place the correct rods in the correct position in the appropriate holes.
 * Place your non-dominant hand on the handle under the curved hand guard.
 * Take the knife with your dominant hand and hold the knife vertically, with the edge facing down and the point away from you.
 * Move the edge of the knife with light pressure and while holding the knife straight along one of the sharpening rods and move the knife towards you. At the end of the movement, the tip must end up at the base of the sharpening rod.
 * Repeat the movement with the other sharpening rod so that you sharpen both sides of the knife.
 * Pass both sides 20 times along the grinding rods and look at the cut. Not satisfied with the end result? Move both sides alongside the sharpening rods another 20 times until you have achieved the desired sharpness.
 
 ### Maintenance

 During use you will notice that mainly the ceramic sharpeners turn dark during the sharpening process. This is the material the ceramics removes from the knife. If the material accumulates too much, the sharpening rod will no longer function properly. The star-shaped holes in the Gauntlet in which you place the grinding rods allow you to rotate the grinding rod at a 20 degree angle. This allows you to use a part of the sharpening rod that is not contaminated with any of the sharpening residue. As such you can sharpen your knife for a longer period of time. If all sides of the sharpening rod are dirty, you can easily clean it. Use some warm water, soap and a scouring sponge and before you know it, the rods will be like new again. The CBN sticks can also be cleaned in this way.
