# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. ## Comparison


When we compare a torch that works on CR123A-batteries to one that works on AAA-batteries, we see that both versions are usually very compact. The CR123A has the advantage of a higher capacity over most AAA-batteries. For example, a Duracel CR123a battery usually contains 1600mAh, and an Energizer Industrial AAA-battery only 1250mAh. Also, a CR123A hardly discharges by itself and can not leak. This makes the torch with these batteries very suitable for sporadic use. So if you need a torch to put in your car for emergency cases, one with CR123A-batteries is very suitable for this job.


When you own torches that work on 18650-batteries as well as CR123A-batteries, then you can often use 2 CR123A's in a torch that was designed for an 18650-battery. Ideal in case you unexpectedly end up without charged 18650's.


## Disadvantage


A disadvantage of these batteries is the fact that they are usually quite pricey. We only sell very high quality Duracell CR123A-batteries. We buy these in large quantities, in order to offer these quality batteries for a very sharp price.

## Charging batteries


Alkaline batteries are great as non-rechargeable batteries. They work well, in very low temperatures, can store a lot and last a long time. So perfect for occasional use. Many new lights are enhanced with rechargeable 18650 batteries. These are very practical in terms of use, work extremely well and can be used intensively. For these you can also separately purchase 18650 battery chargers.


When you don’t use a battery for a longer period of time remove them from the device. This prevents the battery from leaking, which could, for instance, really damage the insides of your flashlight.

The lights in the ‘Rechargeable torches’ category can be charged without having to unscrew them. In many cases the charging stations for the rechargeable torches can be mounted in a fixed place at home or in the car. Many torches in our assortment can be used with rechargeable batteries or accumulators. In most cases that means that the batteries must be removed from the lamp to charge them individually. That works fine too, but is a bit more time consuming.

For many old accumulators it is not very good to charge them endlessly. The often used nickel metalhydrid (NiMh) accumulators are a lot less sensitive to the memory effect. It still is sensible not to permanently charge your rechargeable torch if you use it little. The question also is whether a rechargeable torch is the obvious choice for someone who doesn't use their lamp for months on end. A light with for example CR123 batteries might be a better choice because those batteries preserve their charge for an extremely long time (up to 10 years).

Rechargeable lights with Li-ion accumulators, like the Fenix RC10 can be permanently connected to the charger. The Li-ion batteries we know from our mobile phones are not subject to the memory effect. In practice they therefore are ideal for all users.

A few examples of CR123A batteries: they never leak and even after 10 years the batteries are still filled by 90%. The rechargeable variant, RCR123a batteries, are not available from knivesandtools.The reason is that the rechargeable version cannot be produced by A brands. Their quality is very disappointing in practice and their reliability cannot be guaranteed. In addition these batteries cannot provide the power a modern LED-lamp needs. We do provide an alternative with 18650 batteries for many torches on CR123A.

On this page, you will find all torches with an 18650 battery. If you use your torch intensively, a torch that runs on an 18650 battery is often the most suitable solution. The batteries have a high capacity and can withstand heavy use. As a result, an 18650 battery offers you maximum performance when it comes to burn time and brightness, which are important aspects when choosing a torch. 

An 18560 battery will always discharge itself slightly. This makes these batteries less suitable if you only use a torch sporadically. If you only use the torch every once in a while, we recommend choosing a torch with CR123A batteries. These do not discharge themselves and can last up to 10 years.

I will begin with a short introduction after which I will take a closer look at the light itself. ## **Unboxing**


The BC25R is wrapped in a shiny 'hardcase' in the famous colours Fenix has been using for a while now. Most information and special features can immediately be found on the outside, you will definitely not need the manual for that. The good thing about this box is that it won't tear easily like, for instance, a cardboard box, to make sure you even store the light in it if you don't use it for a longer period of time. The light and its holder are neatly clicked in the plastic holder, but the accessories and included documents sort of 'roam' around in the box. Because the light is made from one piece, spare parts are not included: only the necessary charging cable and some mounting rubbers are included. In addition to a multi-lingual manual and a warranty card. Not excessive, but exactly what we need.

## 18650 battery, 21700 battery, CR123A battery or 16340 battery?

A light that runs on 18650 batteries can often also handle CR123A batteries. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

[18650s](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/18650-lithium-ion-accumulators-and-loaders.htm) contain Li-ion cells and are highly suitable for flashlights that are used regularly. They provide lots of power and are rechargeable, making them an attractive and economical choice for intensive use. They don't leak, and they have a high capacity. But you do have to bear the following in mind: 18650 batteries like to be used regularly. Are you planning to put an 18650 battery away for longer than 4 months? Then you'll have to use it and recharge it in the meantime. They stay at their best when used regularly.

### 21700 batteries

[21700 batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/21700-lithium-ion-batteries-and-chargers.htm) are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Like other batteries, they are named after their dimensions: 21700 batteries are 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. Because they are rechargeable, they're ideal if you use your flashlight regularly. It's good to remember that 21700 batteries can be protected or unprotected. This protection ensures that the battery doesn't get overloaded. Moreover, a protected battery doesn't overheat. So always choose a high quality battery. The biggest difference between 18650 and 21700 batteries is their size. 21700 batteries are slightly bigger than 18650 batteries. Because it is a little bigger, a 21700 battery also has more power and a longer run time.

### CR123A batteries

These are lithium batteries that cannot be recharged. Often, you can replace one 18650 battery with two [CR123A batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/cr123a-batteries.htm). The big advantage of a CR123A battery is that it holds its charge for 9 years without any significant self-discharge. They also perform better in very cold conditions than Li-ion batteries. ### 16340 battery

From a technical point of view, a [16340 battery](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/aa-batteries-penlite.htm?battery-type=16340) is equivalent to an 18650 battery, but in the size of a CR123A battery. For old flashlights that are too narrow for an 18650 battery but can take CR123A batteries, or for lights that normally run on one CR123A battery, 18340 batteries are definitely worth considering. Some flashlights that run on one CR123A battery deliver a higher capacity with a 16340 battery than with a regular CR123A battery. On the other hand, a 16340 battery usually has a relatively low capacity and therefore doesn't last for as long. The advantage they offer is that they're rechargeable. Again, they need to be used and recharged regularly in order to maintain their capacity as well as possible.

## Wood


Let's start from the beginning: wood is a natural product. This means that it is beautifully drawn by mother nature. It also means that it has some erratic, natural properties. This is because a wooden cutting board works. We don't mean that it necessarily brings food to the table, although it can be used for that, of course. With working wood we mean that it expands and shrinks depending on humidity and temperature. It's alive, as it were. Because of this, cracks and gaps can occur. Besides the fact that these cracks and gaps are not particularly attractive, they can also become an easy hang out for bacteria. Something we want to avoid.


## Antibacterial effect


Some people say that a wooden cutting board is not hygienic. This is in fact not true. When you cut, small grooves will be made in the board, and bacteria will collect there. The thing is, that a groove in a plastic cutting board will (partly) close arround the dirt inside the groove. Therefore, when you wash the board, it is not guaranteed that you wash off all the dirt from the grooves. A wooden cutting board does not close arround the dirt, but will open during cleaning. This way, you can be sure you'll wash everything out of the groove. Besides this, the tannin in the wood helps quite a bit, by killing a big part of the bacteria.

How do you maintain a wooden cutting board?
