Did your product break? We would love to help you sort out the warranty. This is how it works.

1 You can register the warranty claim via the [contact form](https://support.knivesandtools.com/hc/en-us?w-warranty=1).

2 We will send you a warranty number and an advice on the possible outcome.

3 You will send the product to us.

4 We will send you an email as soon as we have received the product and the warranty claim.

5 Our product specialist will check your product and, if necessary, send it to our supplier. We will do whatever we can to fix the product.

6 Our customer service department will inform you about the status and progress .

### The warranty process

You need a warranty number for the warranty claim. You can request this number via the [contact form](https://support.knivesandtools.com/hc/en-us?w-warranty=1). You write down this number on the packing slip, turning it into your warranty form. We will email you the instructions on how to return the product. If you don't have the packing slip anymore, you can download and print a warranty form [here](https://katogroup.a.bigcontent.io/v1/static/warrantyclaim-uk).

When processing warranty cases we often depend on the suppliers and the time it will take them to resolve the issue. That is why a warranty claim can take some time.

Not happy with what you ordered? We will help you return your order. This is how it works.

### Conditions

Things to keep in mind: 
* You can return your order within 30 days after delivery. 
* If there is any damage to the product as a result of use that does not include determining the functionality of the goods, we reserve the right to charge depreciation. 
* It is not possible to exchange your item for another item by returning it. Instead, we will give you a refund and you can then place another order on our website.

### Fill out the return form

Use the packing slip as a return form or download and print the return form [here](https://katogroup.a.bigcontent.io/v1/static/returnform-com). Tell us which item you wish to return and what you want us to do. Do you prefer a different product? Order it on the website, it is not possible to change your order.

### Send it back to us

When returning one or more items, please ensure that everything is properly packed to avoid transport damage. It is preferable to return your item in the box it came in. Please include all accessories and included parts in their original packages.

### Follow-up

* The return package goes to the collecting point in Germany. From there it is forwarded to our warehouse in the Netherlands. As soon as the package is received there, we will send a confirmation. Processing and handling can take up to 8 working days.
* If the return meets the conditions you will receive the purchase amount within four working days. We will always refund the money via the payment method used when you paid for your order.

# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

## What data do we collect?

When you order at our website we need data to make sure we can, for instance, complete the payment correctly and ship your package to the right address. Or if we need to reach you if something goes wrong with your order. We also collect cookies, but more about that later.

## For what purpose do we collect this data?

It sounds obvious: to deliver an order we need your address, or that of the recipient. We, however, would still like to explain.

### Processing your order

* To properly process your order we use your NAW data. We store your information just in case you would like to return your products or for warranty purposes.
* If necessary we can also share your information with third parties such as our carriers to make sure your order is properly processed.

### Processing payment transactions

* To properly process the payment of your order you choose a payment method. You share the remaining information with this payment method and your bank, not with us.

### Communication

* In order to simplify the communication with regards to your offer and/or other questions, we use your contact information. This information and the contents of this communication between you and us is stored at a secure location.
* Via our web shop we always enable you to ask questions via different channels (such as chat, email, telephone and social media). You are the one to decide which information you provide when you use one of these channels.

### Execution of statutory duty

* In order to comply to our legal obligation we store your order history, including the payment details, within the set statutory period. The Tax and Customs Administrations requires us to store our administration including your invoice, payment and order history for seven years.

### Fraud prevention

* In order to prevent fraud we, if there is a legitimate interest, will use your IP address, address and payment information. In the case of an official request from an authority in the field of law and order we will share this information.

## Retention periods

The personal data will be stored as long as is necessary to process your order(s), including the guarantee, unless there is a legal obligation that requires longer storage (like the fiscal storage obligation as mentioned above).

## Disclosure to third parties

We pass on your information to our partners involved in the execution of our business. Under no circumstances are they allowed to use this information for other purposes than those stated by us. The secure transfer of your information is guaranteed by an editorial agreement between Knivesandtools and the partner in question. We are committed to this. If we are not satisfied, we will stop all cooperation.

Our web shop has been enhanced with social media buttons. These buttons will only provide a link and won’t share personal information with third parties. Because you can log in via a social media account, the social media party involved will pass on the email address that belongs to the user account.

## Security

We take technical and organisational security measures to limit abuse and unauthorised access to personal information. Our internet connection is secured with a SSL. Access to our database is restricted via secured accounts. Our employees are aware of the new privacy rules and adhere to them.

## Newsletter

We send out a weekly newsletter with which we want to inform interested parties about our products and the amazing adventures that lie ahead when you use them. During the ordering process, or via your account, you can register to our newsletter. Each newsletter contains a link you can use to unsubscribe. Sometimes we send newsletters to a smaller group of subscribers with subjects we believe not everyone is interested in.

## What we DON’T do with your information!

We DO NOT make personalized offers: the price is the same for everyone. How else do you keep things fair?

We DO NOT sell our information to third parties. We sell knives. And pans, flashlights, power banks and...

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

WMF's cutlery is made of Cromargan®. This is the registered trademark of WMF's 18/10 stainless steel, since 1927. The name Cromargan® is a compound of the terms Crom and Argan. Over 85 years ago, a 25-year old German entrepreneur named Eugen Hollaender came to Apeldoorn. ## Why sharpening convex knives is easy


Sharpening your own knives is getting more and more popular. Sharpening a flat grind, scandi grind or hollow grind is done the same way. You hold the knife at a fixed angle and move the knife, in the same angle, alongside, for instance, a [sharpening stone](kato://content/migrated_pageid_343). As mentioned before, a convex edge has a curved blade. However, sharpening stones are flat, so how do you sharpen a round surface with a flat stone?


Many think that a convex grind is difficult to sharpen. However, with the right knowledge sharpening a convex edge is actually really easy!


When you sharpen at a fixed angle you are constantly focused on sharpening your knife at the right angle. As soon as you change the angle you can change the edge of your knife. The problem is that sharpening by hand is not very accurate. You will never be able to sharpen with a fixed angle without using sharpening aids. When you sharpen a convex edge you don't use a fixed angle. As such you benefit from the lack of precision when you sharpen by hand. As such sharpening a knife with a convex edge by hand feels very natural. In addition, with a convex edge you don't just sharpen the very narrow edge but the entire blade. As such you have more room for small errors. As you can see there are many things to be mentioned that emphasize that sharpening a convex edge is easy!

## Taking a Different Approach


I have always been an advocator of having the right tools for the job. If I need to split wood, I use a hatchet. If I want to carve a spoon, I use a spoon carving knife. Because of this, the knife on my hip tends to be no longer than 4 inches, with a relatively thin width, and so far I have had no need for anything bigger.


However, many of my fellow outdoorsmen prefer themselves to carry a one-tool-option, and to know and trust that the knife on their belt is going to be there for anything that they might call upon it for. Be that cutting up the evening meal or ploughing through knotty pine logs.


I have always been curious as to how this would actually play out in practice, so I decided to ditch the tool roll, and try my hand at using just one tool for all my outdoor chores for a while, and there is no knife I could think better suited to this experiment, than the [KA BAR Becker BK2](kato://product/KABK2).

## Cooking during an emergency
### Heat source
In the absence of gas or electricity, a [burners](kato://category/Gasbranders), [stove](kato://category/Stoves) or wood stove are suitable options. Just make sure you have enough fuel!

### Fire starter
A [fire starter](kato://category/makingfireproduct) includes items like matches, lighters and firesteels. A reliable way to ignite your heat source is essential.

### Suitable pot or pan

The profile of the axe head is also unusual with the depth of the beard. This deep beard will allow the user to really choke up, allowing you to control where the cutting edge is doing the work. The bits profile is simple and balanced, however I would prefer to have a little more blade towards the top to really allow for precision cutting. Regarding the width of the wedge, particularly when it comes to finer work, the types of carving axes I have used in the past have had much narrower wedges, and I do think the thickness here is a little bit of a hindrance for spoon carving and the likes. It wants to split! But perhaps with more time and comfortability with this axe it would make an okay carver. I do think the handle lets it down a bit when it comes to carving also… but I will address that shortly.


## The Handle


The handle is made from birch and provides a simple and natural grip for the hand to find towards the lower end. Personally I would prefer a very slightly longer handle, particularly when splitting slightly larger logs. Normally I would place the back of the axe handle on the log and find somewhere in between to hold it for a downwards swing. A little more length in the handle makes this task easier. However, as stated above, the weight of the head and wide wedge mean that there is not too much force needed for the axe to do its job. It’s worth noting here that Roselli does in fact have a longer handled axe than this one. So if you are looking for something to do more heavy duty tasks, then I would recommend that model.

## Scandi grind vs convex grind


As I was saying at the beginning of this article, this was my first proper experience with a Bark River, having only had brief encounters with them in the past. However, what was also new to me, was working with a Scandi-Vex grind! Simply put, a scandi-vex is a traditional Scandinavian grind (synonymous with most bushcraft knives of this style) with the shoulders of the bevel rounded off, as you would find in a convex blade. At 10.1cm long and 3.6mm, combined with the scandi-vex, I would honestly be hard pushed to find a more suitable and fit for purpose blade for the types of work I find myself doing in the woods.


So whats the advantage of a scandi-vex? Although I have been known to tote an ESEE or a BK2 into the woods with me from time to time, the majority of my knives tend to lean more towards the scandi grind type (a Mora Garberg is usually my go-to). I find the scandi to be best suited to things like feathersticking and woodcrafts in general. When it comes to spoon carving, a mora 106 with a zero-grind edge cannot be beaten in my option. The Scandinavian grind was after all, designed primarily for woodwork. The scandi grind on a bushcraft knife, is designed to shed wood away and its amazing at doing this. But with blades any thicker than say a carving knife, this grind it tends to be a little too clunky when it comes to finer tasks such as food prep or game dressing. And this is where the scandivex comes into play.


In true bushcraft fashion, the first task I threw at this blade was simply to make some feathersticks. This is always a good place to start for me as it allows me to experiment with a few different grips and techniques. It is also a pretty surefire way of seeing if the knife has any hotspots in the blade or handle, that can potentially wear out and tire your hand with repeated use. Using this blade to make feather sticks was a dream. It will glide through the wood with so little resistance, because there is much less surface area for the wood to come into contact with the blade after the edge. Unlike a scandi, which retains a lot of contact with the wood, the convex shoulders simply roll away the feather. The result is a smooth and accurate blade that gave me zero trouble slicing through the wood.

## Choosing the right Z-Saw for you

Z-Saw’s range spans across multiple types of hand saws, and they tailor their tools to suit the needs of many types of customer. When choosing a saw, the specs and choices can seem a little overwhelming at first. But there are a few factors which need to be considered when you are choosing the right saw for your needs. These considerations include the blade's tooth size, length, ergonomics and packability. These elements go for all types of saw brands. What do you need to consider when choosing a saw for your own needs? Let us take a look at some of the specs and break down how they affect your saw choice.

## Tips per inch

One of the biggest deciding factors is blade choice is its TPI (tips per inch). Generally speaking, the fewer teeth per inch on a blade, the larger those teeth tend to be, and the deeper the gullets. This means that with each stroke of the saw, a larger quantity of material is being cut and removed. As a result, a blade with fewer, larger teeth per inch will cut much quicker than one with more teeth. However, because of this aggressive cutting action, there is a greater chance that the material’s fibres will become torn, creating a rough finish. The more teeth per inch, the finer the finishing cut will be. So if making finer cuts is more preferable, for example if you are trimming a spoon blank or working a piece of wood for sloyd, then a blade with more teeth may be more preferable for your needs.

If you are looking for a more aggressive finish in the non-folding saws and power is what you're looking for, then the FS-245 is recommended, with 7 tips per inch. This is comparably more aggressive to the FS-270 with a TPI of 11 which will provide a beautifully smooth finish on your cut.

In the folding range (Tuck-In models) the 210 coarse model will give you a TPI of 8.5, even more aggressive than the FS models. However this blade is shorter and as a result requires more full strokes to get the job done. This would arguably be mitigated by the more aggressive teeth. The 210 fine is also more fine than the FS model, with a TPI of 12, resulting in a beautifully smooth cut, perfect for bushcraft projects that require a level of finesse.

## Blade Kerf

Another consideration when you are choosing your saw type is the blade's kerf. This term is used to describe the thickness of the cut that a blade makes in a piece of wood as it cuts through it. The term is also sometimes used to describe the thickness of the blade, although often the kerf will actually be wider than the blade due to the cutting tips being slightly wider than the blade itself. The wider the kerf, the wider the cut will be. Woodworkers pay attention to kerf width, particularly where accuracy is essential. In our case, looking at pruning and folding saws, perhaps this is not such a critical factor. But it’s worth understanding this element of a saw's cutting blade, as it will affect not just how easy a blade can get through a piece of wood, but how much sawdust and waste is produced as a result of a cut. The thinner a cut, the less wood is wasted, however it will be more difficult to cut as you get deeper into the wood, with less space available for the dust to escape, resulting in a clogged cut that can become difficult. As a rule of thumb, a thicker kerf is preferable for outdoor saws.

In the FS models, the 245 coarse has a blade thickness of 0.90 mm, as well as the 210 course Tuck-in model. This will give you plenty of clearance for your dust to be removed as you are working through a piece of wood. This spec however only becomes important when you are cutting through larger chunks of wood.

The [Hultafors Ekelund](kato://product/HF841710) (Classic Hunter) was my very first axe when I started going to the woods, and I still have it today. With an overall length of 20”, it is long enough to be used two-handed, making it ideal for easier forestry work and splitting. The Ekelund is the perfect middle ground between carrying a larger splitting axe, and a smaller hatchet. The convex head, made from high quality Swedish steel, is hand forged and the profile makes it usable for skinning game with great precision. It is a great size for camp craft, and you could certainly get away with finer carving work with it. However, with an overall weight of 1.25kg, prolonged use such as for spoon carving would not be advisable.


The high quality leather mask for this axe, in my opinion, has an advantage over other axe masks I have seen from other manufacturers. That is because it does not have a snap button, but instead a piece of leather that ties off around the back of the axe head. This is particularly good for a number of reasons. One is that it can be pulled nice and tight, as the leather warps and stretches over time, rather than relying on a simple button snap that may loosen or fail with age. Another advantage of this, is that it is very easy to replace in the field with a piece of paracord or other cordage, should it snap or fail on you.


If you are the type of outdoorsman using your axe for crafting or building work, a smaller and more nimble axe could be preferable for you. A one handed axe that was lighter and faster like the Fiskars Norden N7 would probably be more suitable for your needs. Regardless of what style or size you use, the axe is always going to be the friend of a bushcrafter. But now let us move on to the companion of the axe. Nessmuks belt knife.
