## Retention periods

The personal data will be stored as long as is necessary to process your order(s), including the guarantee, unless there is a legal obligation that requires longer storage (like the fiscal storage obligation as mentioned above).

We pass on your information to our partners involved in the execution of our business. Under no circumstances are they allowed to use this information for other purposes than those stated by us. The secure transfer of your information is guaranteed by an editorial agreement between Knivesandtools and the partner in question. We are committed to this. A few examples of CR123A batteries: they never leak and even after 10 years the batteries are still filled by 90%. The rechargeable variant, RCR123a batteries, are not available from knivesandtools.The reason is that the rechargeable version cannot be produced by A brands. Their quality is very disappointing in practice and their reliability cannot be guaranteed. In addition these batteries cannot provide the power a modern LED-lamp needs. We do provide an alternative with 18650 batteries for many torches on CR123A.

Norse knives are the perfect blend of craftsmanship and modern technology. At Knivesandtools you can find different types and brands of AA batteries. Our range contains both rechargeable batteries and batteries for single use. There are three different cell types for AA batteries. These are alkaline, lithium and NiMh.

**Alkaline AA batteries**: these batteries cannot be recharged. As such the batteries are often very affordable. The chances of leakage, however, are bigger than for rechargeable batteries. If you leave your alkaline batteries in a device for a long time, you run the risk of battery leakage. That's why you need to replace the alkaline batteries in time.

**NiMH batteries**: these are rechargeable batteries. These batteries are a little more expensive but have a longer life because they can be recharged. NiMH batteries won't leak.

**Lithium batteries**: lithium batteries have a higher capacity than alkaline batteries. The lithium battery can hold its charge up to 12 years and even continues to function at lower temperatures. These batteries can leak but not as easily as alkaline batteries. As such this type of battery is a great choice for devices that are not used on a daily basis. Do check in advance if your device can handle lithium batteries.

When we compare a torch that works on CR123A-batteries to one that works on AAA-batteries, we see that both versions are usually very compact. The CR123A has the advantage of a higher capacity over most AAA-batteries. For example, a Duracel CR123a battery usually contains 1600mAh, and an Energizer Industrial AAA-battery only 1250mAh. Also, a CR123A hardly discharges by itself and can not leak. This makes the torch with these batteries very suitable for sporadic use. So if you need a torch to put in your car for emergency cases, one with CR123A-batteries is very suitable for this job.


When you own torches that work on 18650-batteries as well as CR123A-batteries, then you can often use 2 CR123A's in a torch that was designed for an 18650-battery. Ideal in case you unexpectedly end up without charged 18650's.


## Disadvantage


A disadvantage of these batteries is the fact that they are usually quite pricey. We only sell very high quality Duracell CR123A-batteries. We buy these in large quantities, in order to offer these quality batteries for a very sharp price.

## Charging batteries


Alkaline batteries are great as non-rechargeable batteries. They work well, in very low temperatures, can store a lot and last a long time. So perfect for occasional use. Many new lights are enhanced with rechargeable 18650 batteries. These are very practical in terms of use, work extremely well and can be used intensively. For these you can also separately purchase 18650 battery chargers.


When you don’t use a battery for a longer period of time remove them from the device. This prevents the battery from leaking, which could, for instance, really damage the insides of your flashlight.

### ESEE Izula: het lemmet 

Net als zijn grotere broers is de Izula in vrijwel alle gevallen gemaakt van 1095-koolstofstaal, die ESEE veel gebruikt voor z’n messen. Niet roestvast, wel erg goed bestand tegen zware belasting. Misschien wel net zo belangrijk: 1095 is ook erg makkelijk te slijpen. Hierdoor kun je in het veld met relatief beperkte middelen je mes toch weer scherp slijpen. De geweldige gebruikseigenschappen van het staal staan garant voor een leven lang plezier. 

 

### ESEE Izula: de handgreep 

De full-tang handgreep is voorzien van fraaie micarta-delen. Hij ligt hiermee subliem in de hand en hou je grip zelfs in de meest vochtige omstandigheden. De handgreep heeft een grote ring die het makkelijk maakt een stuk paracord of zelfs een karabiner doorheen te haken. Veel Izula's komen zonder greepdelen en kun je voorzien van een paracord-wrap. ## Features of flashlights on AAA batteries 

The main advantage of AAA-battery torches is that these batteries are available everywhere, even at supermarkets. Everyone has a few batteries in their kitchen drawer. If not, they are easily and cheaply available at any supermarket. Moreover, you still have the choice between single-use alkaline or lithium batteries or rechargeable NiMH batteries. These can, of course, be used many times. 

### NiMH 

Rechargeable NiMH batteries are suitable for use in high-power torches. Several variants are available with different capacities. Each version has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, NiMHs are available with a higher capacity that are more sensitive to self-discharge. This means they need to be used and charged regularly. Lower-capacity rechargeable batteries tend to be less prone to self-discharge anyway. This allows them to remain unused for a bit longer without losing charge. 

### Alkaline 

The alkaline variant is the most common. You will find these in almost all shops. Although they are not rechargeable, they have the significant advantage that they are quite inexpensive. In addition, they retain their charge for around 4 years. However, alkaline batteries are not so suitable for torches that require somewhat higher amperage. In addition, these batteries do tend to leak over time. 

### Lithium 

Lithium-AAAs can deliver higher current than the alkaline variant. Almost all LED torches that run on alkaline batteries will also do well on lithium batteries. You'll need to be careful with torches that have incandescent bulbs. Due to the higher current, some of these bulbs may burn out. However, this depends on the properties of the lithium penlites you use. So keep this in mind. Alkaline batteries, on the other hand, can be used in a torch designed for lithium batteries.

## 18650 battery, 21700 battery, CR123A battery or 16340 battery?

A light that runs on 18650 batteries can often also handle CR123A batteries. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

### 18650 batteries

[18650s](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/18650-lithium-ion-accumulators-and-loaders.htm) contain Li-ion cells and are highly suitable for flashlights that are used regularly. They provide lots of power and are rechargeable, making them an attractive and economical choice for intensive use. They don't leak, and they have a high capacity. But you do have to bear the following in mind: 18650 batteries like to be used regularly. Are you planning to put an 18650 battery away for longer than 4 months? Then you'll have to use it and recharge it in the meantime. They stay at their best when used regularly.

### 21700 batteries

[21700 batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/21700-lithium-ion-batteries-and-chargers.htm) are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Like other batteries, they are named after their dimensions: 21700 batteries are 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. Because they are rechargeable, they're ideal if you use your flashlight regularly. It's good to remember that 21700 batteries can be protected or unprotected. This protection ensures that the battery doesn't get overloaded. Moreover, a protected battery doesn't overheat. So always choose a high quality battery. The biggest difference between 18650 and 21700 batteries is their size. 21700 batteries are slightly bigger than 18650 batteries. Because it is a little bigger, a 21700 battery also has more power and a longer run time.

### CR123A batteries

These are lithium batteries that cannot be recharged. Often, you can replace one 18650 battery with two [CR123A batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/cr123a-batteries.htm). The big advantage of a CR123A battery is that it holds its charge for 9 years without any significant self-discharge. They also perform better in very cold conditions than Li-ion batteries. Are you thinking of leaving a flashlight in your meter box in case the power goes out? Or in your car for a long time in case you break down? ### 16340 battery

From a technical point of view, a [16340 battery](https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/aa-batteries-penlite.htm?battery-type=16340) is equivalent to an 18650 battery, but in the size of a CR123A battery. For old flashlights that are too narrow for an 18650 battery but can take CR123A batteries, or for lights that normally run on one CR123A battery, 18340 batteries are definitely worth considering. Some flashlights that run on one CR123A battery deliver a higher capacity with a 16340 battery than with a regular CR123A battery. On the other hand, a 16340 battery usually has a relatively low capacity and therefore doesn't last for as long. The advantage they offer is that they're rechargeable. Again, they need to be used and recharged regularly in order to maintain their capacity as well as possible.

CRKT and Kershaw: two of the biggest brands in the pocket knife industry. Many hall-of-fame knives have been produced by one of these two brands. Benchmade produces a lot of excellent bushcraft knives. Two of the most popular options are the [Benchmade Puukko 200](kato://product/BE200) and the [Benchmade Leuku 202](kato://product/BE202). Both with similar origins. But what are the differences? We will compare both models.


## Similarities between the Benchmade Puukko and Leuku


Both have Scandinavian origins. Both the traditional Puukko model and the Leuku model come from this region. Originally, of course, always enhanced with a wooden handle. But that is not typical for Benchmade. That is why Benchmade used Santoprene for the handle. Rubber-like, offers enough grip and is rock-solid. Even in extremely cold circumstances. Even the size of the handle is similar.

We see that more and more people start 'prepping'. The word prepping comes from 'to prepare', so getting ready. The recent pandemic showed us that it is not crazy at all to prepare yourself for something you cannot foresee. It doesn't have to be a global issue, it can also be local. A power outage, for instance. Or a storm causes a leak or flood. In this topic we will tell you more about the five basics of survival and help you choose useful gear that will help you out during emergency situations.

## Prepping is for everyone!
You might think prepping is something for those who embark on exciting adventures. Those who might find themselves in ‘extreme circumstances’ from time to time. Something they need to prepare for. Nothing could be further from the truth. More and more people namely store a basic survival kit in their car, or some extra food. Prepping, after all, is not getting ready for the Apocalypse, but preparing for unforeseen circumstances. So, useful for everyone! As such it is not that surprising it is so popular these days.

## Why prep?
The future is unsure and as we like to say, better safe than sorry! It is for a reason, after all, that the boy scouts motto is 'be ready!' Owning a flashlight during a power outage will truly bring a smile to your face. Or if you are dealing with a leak and have tarp close to temporarily reduce the leakage. But also on the road it is best to be prepared. Let's say you find yourself without gas and need to wait for help. That is when you need to stay warm, and could use, for instance, a blanket.

## What do you need for prepping?
In the survival world a lot of thought is given to prepping. To survive in nature you need a couple basics. Survival enthusiasts work with the five c's: Cutting tool, Combustion device, Cover, Container and Cordage. We will tell you more about that later. These basics focus on surviving in nature, in extreme circumstances, but are also useful in daily situations. We will discuss each of them in this topic.

### 1. Cutting tool
First of all it is important to own a good 'cutting tool'. A strong [bushcraft knife](kato://category/bushcraftknivessurvival) is the best option. A knife like that shouldn't be too big, because you need to be able to do everything with it. Food prep, fine cutting tasks etc. It is also very practical if the spine of the knife is flat, to make sure you can use it as a firestriker (also see the second C). Many choose a multi-tool or pocket knife as a standard emergency tool. These are practical tools, but shouldn't be your only cutting tools. They are simply not strong enough for that.

## Why we stopped selling rechargeable CR123A batteries:


There are various reasons why we no longer sell rechargeable CR123A batteries.


Firstly, the many problems we had with those batteries. They range from overheating batteries, defect batteries to leaking and even a few exploding batteries.


We are not the only ones to have those problems. Read the forums...


The background of that problem is that the leading manufacturers of Lithium-Ion accumulators, like Sanyo and Panasonic, do not produce cells in a format suitable for the production of a RCR123A accumulator. The accumulators used for RCR123A batteries are therefore of a lesser quality.


The 2nd reason is that the capacity and the so-called C-rating* of the rechargeable CR123A accumulators fall short of the powerful torches that are currently produced. The low capacity provides disappointing life. And the too low C-rating generates overload of the accumulators with high heat as a result.


The C-rating indicates the maximum authorised load of an accumulator. An accumulator with a capacity of 600mAh and a C-rating of 1.5 may be loaded with maximum 600 x 1.5 = 900 mA.

This small drawback means it’s not a 10/10, but thanks to how easily it can be sharpened again, I don’t find this annoying. I sharpened it once, and that was quick and effortless. Isa van Dijk: 'These are very nice knives, they feel great in the hand with a comfortable weight distribution. They are a bit on the heavy side, but not clumsy at all. I can’t say anything about their lifespan since I haven’t used them for long, but they give the impression that they will last a long time!'

## 18650 battery, 21700 battery, CR123A battery or 16340 battery?


A light that runs on 18650 batteries can often also handle CR123A batteries. Both have advantages and disadvantages.


### 18650 batteries


[18650s](https://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/ct/18650-lithium-ion-accumulators-and-loaders.htm) contain Li-ion cells and are highly suitable for flashlights that are used regularly. They provide lots of power and are rechargeable, making them an attractive and economical choice for intensive use. They don't leak, and they have a high capacity. But you do have to bear the following in mind: 18650 batteries like to be used regularly. Are you planning to put an 18650 battery away for longer than 4 months?  Then you'll have to use it and recharge it in the meantime. They stay at their best when used regularly.


### 21700 batteries


[21700 batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/ct/21700-lithium-ion-batteries-and-chargers.htm) are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Like other batteries, they are named after their dimensions: 21700 batteries are 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. Because they are rechargeable, they're ideal if you use your flashlight regularly. It's good to remember that 21700 batteries can be protected or unprotected. This protection ensures that the battery doesn't get overloaded. Moreover, a protected battery doesn't overheat. So always choose a high quality battery. The biggest difference between 18650 and 21700 batteries is their size. 21700 batteries are slightly bigger than 18650 batteries. Because it is a little bigger, a 21700 battery also has more power and a longer run time.


### CR123A batteries


These are lithium batteries that cannot be recharged. Often, you can replace one 18650 battery with two [CR123A batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/ct/cr123a-batteries.htm). The big advantage of a CR123A battery is that it holds its charge for 9 years without any significant self-discharge. They also perform better in very cold conditions than Li-ion batteries. Are you thinking of leaving a flashlight in your meter box in case the power goes out? Or in your car for a long time in case you break down? ### 16340 battery


From a technical point of view, a [16340 battery](https://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/ct/aa-batteries-penlite.htm?battery-type=16340) is equivalent to an 18650 battery, but in the size of a CR123A battery. For old flashlights that are too narrow for an 18650 battery but can take CR123A batteries, or for lights that normally run on one CR123A battery, 18340 batteries are definitely worth considering. Some flashlights that run on one CR123A battery deliver a higher capacity with a 16340 battery than with a regular CR123A battery. On the other hand, a 16340 battery usually has a relatively low capacity and therefore doesn't last for as long. The advantage they offer is that they're rechargeable. Again, they need to be used and recharged regularly in order to maintain their capacity as well as possible.

Which type of battery is most suitable for my usage?

## Don't be too frugal - just use them!

This doesn't mean that you have to use the battery and then just throw it away, but rather that you can simply use it. We sometimes hear from customers telling us that they are extra frugal with their 18650 battery and charge it as little as possible. This is misplaced frugality! If a battery is not used for longer than four months, it will self-discharge. This means that it will run itself empty. Not in the sense of it leaking, but the charge will decrease. Therefore, keep it active by using it and charging it.

## How do you extend the life of the battery?

To improve the life of the batteries there are a few things you can do! If you use [alkaline batteries](kato://content/migrated_pageid_557?1-844&ms_fk_batceltype=alkaline) we recommend removing them from the flashlight if you don’t intend to use it for a while. These batteries can namely start to leak. The alkaline liquid strongly affects aluminium. The result is that the switch breaks down and the batteries get stuck inside the body. The light can no longer be repaired and the warranty - on both the light and the batteries - is void in its entirety.

With other batteries you have two options. Remove the batteries or loosen the back of the light. Even if you don't use the light it will retrieve power from the battery. As such the battery will not only be dead in time it will also be too deeply discharged. By officially breaking this connection you solve this problem. Do you prefer removing the batteries from the light? Please make sure the poles don't come into contact with each other. You should also always store your batteries at room temperature. Hot and cold temperatures will cause the voltage to slowly decrease.

With [Li-Ion batteries](kato://content/migrated_pageid_557?=1-844&ms_fk_batceltype=Li-ion) some people sometimes say: 'I take good care of my batteries, I charge them as little as possible!' With these types of batteries, however, this could have the wrong effect. As such you should charge and use them regularly. The result is that you can use your batteries for years to come!

How long is the warranty on a head lamp or flashlight battery?

CR123A batteries keep their charge a very long time. Even 10 years later they still are full to 90% (providing they have not been used of course). In addition, they never leak, which of course is a great advantage in an expensive torch. The disadvantage of CR123A batteries is that they cost more than alkaline batteries and are not readily available. We sell them at a reasonable price, but if you have to buy them unexpectedly in a photo shop you will pay the full price. Keeping a spare set is recommended.

Choosing a battery

If you have found the perfect [flashlight](kato://content/migrated_pageid_881) or [head torch,](kato://category/headlightsprod) you'll want to make sure you can use it as long as possible. But what is the best way to maintain a flashlight or head torch? And what do you need to pay attention to? Maintenance isn't difficult, but very important. If you take good care of your flashlight or head torch, it can last 10 to 20 years.

## Prevent water damage

Is your flashlight waterproof? If so it is important to properly maintain the o-rings and replace them in time. As soon as the o-rings break or dries out your flashlight will no longer be waterproof. That is why you should occasionally grease them with [silicone grease](kato://product/NCSG7). You don't have to do this every other week, simply add some grease once a year. When do you, don't forget to grease the rubber tailcap. Not only does this cap wear out, it shouldn't dry out as well. A waterproof head torch is often sealed with a rubber edge. The same principle applies: make sure to regularly grease it with silicone grease. Also make sure you properly close the light after maintenance! This is often where things go wrong. Perhaps you put your light up for storage for some time, loosening the tailcap. Or perhaps you replaced the batteries. When you start using your light again you need to make sure the whole is properly closed off, otherwise water can still seep in. So always check this before use!

## The batteries

### A non-rechargeable flashlight or head torch

Many non-rechargeable flashlights work with AA or AAA batteries. If you use alkaline batteries these can start to leak. That is why you should always use [batteries](kato://category/batteriesproduct) of the same type and the same brand. Are you planning to not use your flashlight or head torch for a while? Remove the batteries. If batteries stay inside an (unused) flashlight or head torch too long, chances are they will start to leak. This doesn't happen as often with lithium batteries, but it can still happen. Especially if you're using batteries that are of a poor quality.

### A rechargeable flashlight

If you own a [rechargeable flashlight](kato://content/migrated_pageid_588), or one with an individual rechargeable battery, it is key you charge it on a regular basis. Planning to not use your flashlight for a while? Loosen the tailcap to make sure there is no voltage on the light. This is better for the battery, but also for the entire light. Don't, however, forget to close it properly if you want to use it again!

## The LED lights

Today almost all lights are enhanced with one or multiple LED lights. It doesn't happen often that the LED breaks before one of the other parts, but it does happen. If you own a [HDS systems](kato://content/migrated_pageid_552) or [Maglite](kato://content/migrated_pageid_560) light you can easily replace the LED lights. For many other brands the following applies: if the LED breaks within 5 years it can be repaired under warranty.

How do you maintain a flashlight? 

## My first impressions:

Smaller than expected for a light that can do so much! Smaller than its brother ([the TK22 UE](kato://product/FETK22)) and similar to the [PD36R](kato://product/FEPD36R). [Fenix](kato://content/migrated_pageid_503) was able to add a larger battery and stronger light source to an identical casing like the TK16. In terms of looks, construction quality I see a lot of similarities with the TK22 (UE). No frills, but a solid product that looks sleek. On the inside it also looks great: no leeway or creaking screw threads. The luminous SST70 LED light is nicely centred in the smooth reflector. Fenix once again shows its worth.

## Always available

## What do you look for when buying a torch for an emergency?

### Flashlight by battery type 
A [battery-operated torch](kato://category/torchesbybatterytype) is a reliable option because you are always assured of light, without depending on a charger. This type of torch also often consumes less energy and has a longer burn time, which is essential during a prolonged emergency situation. They are less bright than a rechargeable model, though. However, the big advantage of a battery-operated torch is that batteries are available almost everywhere. So you won't run out any time soon. Make sure you keep a good supply and watch out for leakage and self-discharge if stored for long periods. 

### Lumens 
The more lumens, the brighter the torch. For home use, 200-500 lumens is often sufficient, but for outdoor or professional use you will benefit from having 1000+ lumens at your disposal. ### Different light modes 
A good torch offers several modes, such as a power-saving mode for longer battery life and a powerful turbo mode for when you temporarily need a lot of light.
