# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. ## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. ## Chris Reeve fixed knives: how it started 

Chris Reeve gained much renown in 1982 for the integral handle construction of his survival knives. These knives consist of a single piece of steel with a hollowed-out handle that can be unscrewed. Chris Reeve came up with this idea when working for the military. He needed a sturdier knife that could better withstand bad weather conditions. These integral survival knives were the first of their kind. Chris Reeve received several awards in the years that followed for his fixed-blade knives. Take the Chris Reeve Green Beret, for example. The Green Beret won the 'Collaboration Knife of the Year' at Blade Show 2003 It's a tactical robust fixed knife made for the U.S. Army Special Forces. In 2007, the Chris Reeve Pacific Knife won the 'American Made Knife of the Year'. This knife, too, was designed for the US military.

For his fixed knives, Chris Reeve really puts the focus on soldiers. This design choice is reflected in the materials used. The handles, for example, mainly feature handle scales made of micarta. Micarta is an incredibly strong and lightweight material that provides great grip. Especially in humid weather conditions, micarta really excels as this material does not lose its texture when wet. This is because the textile fibres expand a bit when wet, giving you more grip. The KG GunKote coating found on many of Chris Reeve's fixed-blade knives prevents rust and reflections, which comes in very handy in many military situations. The blade is made from CPM S45VN steel, an American steel that made its debut in the Mnandi in 2021. Compared to S35VN, S45VN is slightly better when it comes to sharpness retention, and it is also easier to sharpen. 

 

With a little practice, the Mnandi can be opened one-handed with the help of the cut-out in the blade. At first, though, it's probably best to open the knife with two hands. When opened, the blade is locked in place by a frame lock. Even though this small folding knife may look a little austere, the quality of the materials used, and the finish are absolutely exceptional.

 Functionality and quality go hand in hand with this stunning design. The titanium handle is especially striking. Every Mnandi features an exclusive inlay. ## Which sharpening tools are recommended for hedge shears?
For most hedge shears, a sharpening stone with a medium/coarse grit size will be sufficient. Preferably choose a compact sharpening stone that fits well in your hand, so you can move along the edge in a controlled way. A good example is the [Skerper Pocket Stone](kato://product/SVSO003). 

An alternative is an electric knife sharpener, such as the [Work Sharp Ken Onion 2](kato://product/WSKTS-KO2-I) This is especially useful if your hedge shears are very dull, you have a lot of hedge hears to sharpen or just want quick results.

**Please note**: hedge shears don't need the same level of sharpness as kitchen knives. A course to medium grit size (for example, 200 to 600 grit) will usually be sufficient. This will remove burrs and damage fairly quickly.

## Specifications


On the box itself and inside the manual you will find the technical information of the BC25R. The brightness levels and the run times are also indicated here. I will not mention those here because [Knivesandtools also lists these on their website](kato://product/FEBC25R). You will find the specs here. More about the possibilities and options later!


## First impressions / Details


The BC25R is an elongated, rather slim light that doesn't feel too heavy. It looks a bit like its big brother, the BC35R; however, if I am frank I have to say that I feel the design of its other slightly more 'curved' brother, the BC21R is better. The light is made from both metal and plastic, even though you won't immediately notice this. The construction of the BC25R is simply too good for that. The light is properly constructed, we can't find any seams, sharp edges or flaws in the finish. The advantage of lights made from one piece is that the individual parts won't suffer from the continuously opening and closing of the device. In addition, the waterproof function can better be guaranteed. The disadvantage is that you cannot replace the battery. We see the famous Fenix colours: black and matt grey. A little austere, but there is nothing wrong with it. Small prints are added to the plastic parts of the light and the metal surface has been enhanced with engravings. Striking are the cooling ridges at the back; these are there to dissipate the heat properly. Especially in the highest mode of 600 lumens the light needs proper heat dissipation; an additional advantage of a bicycle light is that the wind actively helps cooling down the light. The plastic power-button is located in the middle and has a clear pressure point. Underneath the button we see four blue lights which give you the battery status. The base of the light has been enhanced with a type of 'rail', a raised edge which is used to quickly and effectively slide the light onto the holder. At the front of this rail you will find a micro-usb port that enables you to charge the BC25R. The light cannot stand up tall and can therefore not be used as a 'candle'. Also not really essential for a bicycle light. The head on the BC25R is the most striking aspect of the design. We see a square lens with rounded corners at the bottom with inside a special reflector with many 'mirrors' and different structures. This was clearly well thought-out and the idea was thoroughly tested. The purpose of the reflector is to direct the beam in such a way that you can light up an, as large as possible, surface, but also to make sure you don't blind oncoming traffic. Later on in this test we will see how this works in reality! The XP-G3 LED (the neutral white version) is neatly placed in the middle of the reflector. As it should be; a light source that is not properly centred can seriously affect the profile of the light. The included mounting clamp also looks solid; it is a new design I will discuss further when I discuss the controls of the light. In terms of construction quality and finish this light has nothing to worry about: Even after (unfortunately) quite the fall, which definitely damaged the BC25R, the light still functioned as it should, leaving me with only minor exterior damage. As mentioned before the Impinda is a slip joint. This means that the knife won’t lock when opened. A remarkable step for Chris Reeve Knives, especially as it is the first time they used a slip joint mechanism. The spring itself is already incredibly innovative. In an interview Tim Reeve explains that it is probably the first time that CPM S35VN steel was used for the spring. As a result it is incredibly robust.


But that is not all. Normally speaking the force of the spring is just as strong when closing as when opening. This because the spring constantly uses the same amount of pressure on the blade. For that reason the spring on the Impinda doesn’t have one, but two points of contact where it meets the blade. The first point of contact, which, in closed position is located a little to the front, is a little weaker in terms of strength and leaves you with an openings strength of 268 grams. Once opened the other part of the spring, which is located a little further back, will hit the blade. Because this part of the spring is located a little further back and points down, the pressure the spring applies will only be bigger. As a result the spring will have a strength of 453 grams at this point. The result: the Impinda is easier to open than to close. Incredibly practical for a knife with a slip joint mechanism. It is not the intention that the knife closes during use because of a weak spring, and it shouldn’t also be the case that opening the knife is too difficult. With this incredibly innovative spring CRK and Bill Harsey solve that problem.

## Excellent milling technique


Some people might still think that modern pocket knives simply roll out of a CNC-milling machine. Add the material, load the program and start looking at the clock. Let us burst your bubble: it is not that simple. With the extremely strict tolerances that are necessary for common high-end pocket knives, more craftsmanship than ever is needed to design the right milling programs to end up with the best finishes. Anyone who thinks that simply throwing money at a CNC-milling machine will leave you with the best knives, is mistaken.


Especially this type of milling work is what WE Knife excels at. Almost all We Knife knives are enhanced with extensive milling work in the titanium handles. All with an extremely good surface finishing. You will never find any traces of the milling work and all lines are clean.

### Price range
The price also differs. Both are premium brands. But we see that Benchmade produces a lot of knives listed between 100 and 200 euros. Zero Tolerance produces a couple knives that are listed between 150-200 euros, but most of the knives cost more than 200 euros. So the Zero Tolerance knives are a little more expensive. 

### Finish
Both brands produce amazing knives and you cannot go wrong with either. But when we take a closer look at the details we see that Zero Tolerance is a little better when it comes to the finish. You notice it when you look at the tuning, so how they move and when you look at the grind. 

## Benchmade vs Zero Tolerance: summary
Both produce excellent knives in the United States. [Benchmade](kato://category/benchmadebrand) offers a broader range, with more favourably priced models. [Zero Tolerance](kato://category/zerotolerance), however, produces knives with a slightly better finish. Which brand will you choose? Or will you simply get one from both!

## Prototyping and milling bits


Were you able to produce a working fixture? If so it is time to start producing and testing prototypes with different tools. Used a milling bit too long? You will see it when you look at the finish of the tool. A part of the finish is therefore determined by how often the bits are replaced. A bit can be cheap, but also pretty expensive. Usually a bit is used for milling away material and another for the finish. Often another very fine bit carefully moves over the surface for that nice finish. Might take a lot of time, but it is definitely worth it.


## Finish after milling


In the end you are left with all the parts that were cut out with a CNC-machine. Done? No. They now namely have a surface finish directly from the milling machine. As such you cannot avoid the fact that every part needs to be finished by hand. Sanding, sandblasting, satinizing: whatever the knife needs.


## Cost of a CNC-machine


The CNC-machine itself also doesn't come for free. Modern CNC-machines that are used today can easily take you back 100.000 euros. Sometimes even more, depending on what the machine can do. That amount will be the basis. This does not include the additional costs of the accessories and spare parts. Cost of items such as cutters and coolant. Maintenance. Costs of a CNC-operator that will control the machine, and its (additional) training.


## Conclusion


So is it really that terrible working with a CNC-machine? Absolutely not. It is the only consistent way of shaping so many parts in 3D. And compared to cutting it out by hand with a saw, sharpening and milling parts it is, in most cases, even cheaper.


You do, however, need to know that it is definitely not cheap. And that it does require a great deal of craftsmanship. From drawing to fixture design and from prototyping to the actual production. It is not that simple.

We are talking about thousands of hours spend on one fixed knife with a sheath. In this video he clearly explains how CNC-milling works for him and you can see his machine in action.

We do have to say that he uses a relatively old model from the mid-nineties. Today CNC-machines are little more advanced, faster, and can handle a lot more. The basic principles, however, remain the same and you still need to know what you are doing.


## Which brands are good at CNC-milling?


There are a couple of brands that are exceptional when it comes to milling work. True masters. Sometimes even award-winning. ## Why sharpening convex knives is easy


Sharpening your own knives is getting more and more popular. Sharpening a flat grind, scandi grind or hollow grind is done the same way. You hold the knife at a fixed angle and move the knife, in the same angle, alongside, for instance, a [sharpening stone](kato://content/migrated_pageid_343). As mentioned before, a convex edge has a curved blade. However, sharpening stones are flat, so how do you sharpen a round surface with a flat stone?


Many think that a convex grind is difficult to sharpen. However, with the right knowledge sharpening a convex edge is actually really easy!


When you sharpen at a fixed angle you are constantly focused on sharpening your knife at the right angle. As soon as you change the angle you can change the edge of your knife. The problem is that sharpening by hand is not very accurate. You will never be able to sharpen with a fixed angle without using sharpening aids. When you sharpen a convex edge you don't use a fixed angle. As such you benefit from the lack of precision when you sharpen by hand. As such sharpening a knife with a convex edge by hand feels very natural. In addition, with a convex edge you don't just sharpen the very narrow edge but the entire blade. As such you have more room for small errors. As you can see there are many things to be mentioned that emphasize that sharpening a convex edge is easy!


## Ways to sharpen a convex edge


### Sharpening machine


The easiest way is using a sharpening machine. The grinding belt moves with you as you hold the knife against it, which causes the belt to bend. As such you will always sharpen with a 'convex' angle. ## Kanso stands for simplicity
The word 'kanso' is Japanese for simplicity. This was also the starting point when making this collection. Bushcraft enthusiast Padraig Croke put the new [ESEE 3 in S35VN](kato://product/EE-3PM35V-001) and the [ESEE 6 with 3D handle scales](kato://product/EE-6PB-011) to the test.


## Breaking the Mould

Truly tried and tested, and known for their utilitarian tools, their no nonsense warranty service, and their use of simple but effective materials, [ESEE](kato://content/migrated_pageid_356) are the quintessential made in the USA knife company. They have firmly established their place on the belts of law enforcement officers, military personnel and survival enthusiasts. I think a lot of this reputation comes down to the quality control they are known for. When you use the same steels and the same materials for your blades, I bet you become pretty familiar with the nuances of those materials. But this doesn’t mean that they have rested on their laurels, and they are constantly looking at new markets to tap into. New ways to get their knives into the hands of people that need a reliable tool. Their Camp-Lore series for example, which launched a few years ago, saw them looking to classic knife shapes to bring us tools more suited to bushcraft and woodcraft uses. The two staples in this range were the JG5, inspired by the legendary woodsman Nessmuk and designed by James Gibson, and the PR4, designed by Patrick Rollins and takes inspiration from Horace Kephart. ESEE have their ear close to the ground, interacting with users of their blades and listening to what people want, and with this new range, they have branched out into entirely new materials and production methods. The two blades I had the pleasure of looking at were the new ESEE 3 in CPM S35VN steel and the ESEE 6, both with 3D milled scales. Whether you are already the proud owner of either of the originals, or you are on the market for a new blade, I believe there is something for everyone in here with these new choices. So let’s take a closer look at what the differences are, as well as some advantages and disadvantages on the table.

Bushcraft enthusiast Padraig Croke has been using the [ESEE Izula](kato://content/migrated_pageid_884) for many years. He’s the perfect person to tell us about his long term experiences with the ESEE Izula in this Expert Review.


I have had the Izula II for a number of years now, and it has become a really solid part of my kit. At 4mm thick and with a comfortable 4 inch handle, it’s a lot more knife than it first appears. The Izula II was my first “non traditional” bushcraft knife. Having only dealt with scandi grinds up to that point, the Izula was my first introduction to a flat grind blade and ultimately led to a love affair with [ESEE knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_356).


## Why carry a companion blade?


Often times, when packing for a trip or a day hike the choice of tools comes down to the pairing of certain combinations. For example, if I was to take my [Morakniv Garberg Carbon](kato://product/MO13147) blade with me, a perfect companion to this could be a simple [Mora 106 carving blade](kato://product/MO106-1630), or my [Eldris](kato://content/migrated_pageid_449?ms_fk_zm-series=%5B%27Eldris%27%5D&Category=0ee353ea-8981-44f3-9d0a-fbf0881dbc09), which is stainless. The question I ask myself is, what am I doubling up on here? Is there a reason I would choose to carry this blade over that one, and what do I plan to do when I’m out? Is it a craft based camp, or am I just going for a hike and some lunch? What type of woodland am I going to and what type of tools are going to be needed to process wood. If I was in a coniferous woodland for example, then maybe I would not need a heavy processing tool like an axe with me, as a saw and a large belt knife would maybe prove more effective. My small tinder and kindling sources in a woodland like that are most likely going to be processed by hand, gathering bundles of resinous branches off the forest floor or between the crooks of the trees. Or if my material is marginal… some light batoning and feathersticking. Carrying a larger knife in this instance would make sense, as the lack of an axe might limit your options, should you need to process something larger or split logs down. On the other hand, a broadleaf forest will consist of harder, denser woods that will burn much longer but will require larger tools to process it, such as a bow saw and a hatchet or small axe. In that case, the carrying of a hatchet would mitigate the need to carry a larger knife.


When it comes to carrying a companion blade or “neck knife”, I have found the ESEE Izula II finding its way into my kit on almost every trip since I’ve bought it, about two years ago, becoming one of my most beloved tools to carry. Paired with a larger knife, such as my [Fällkniven S1X](kato://product/FKS1X) or [ESEE PR4](kato://product/EE-ESEE-PR4), the Izula can really deal with the more nimble of tasks required of a blade in the field. Food processing is a little tricky, due to the thickness of the blade, but ferro rod striking, notching and carving, and cutting cordage are tasks I regularly assign to the Izula II. Of course we all love our primary belt knives, but in reality I have found when I carry a neck knife like the Izula II, it’s often more than enough to tackle basic camp chores.
