When it comes to pocket knives, we distinguish between two primary opening mechanisms: one-handed and two-handed. ## What is CPM? 
CPM is a type of powder steel. Powder steel, like CPM S35VN, is produced by atomizing molten steel into fine powder particles which are pressed together under high pressure and sintered into a solid block. This process leaves you with a finer, more uniform microstructure than traditional forged steel. The result is better sharpness retention, wear resistance and toughness. As such powder steel is popular for use in top-quality knives that retain their sharpness well but are also still relatively easy to sharpen. 

## How good is CPM S35VN steel? 
When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is of course relative term. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for CPM S35VN? CPM S35VN offers a good balance between toughness, sharpness retention and corrosion resistance. As such it is often used for top-quality fixed knives. Thanks to the addition of niobium, CPM S35VN is even tougher than CPM S30V steel making it more resistant to chipping. In addition, the refined grain structure ensures that S35VN is easier to sharpen than other top-quality types of steel. 

## What are the disadvantages of CPM S35VN steel? 
With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of CPM S35VN in mind. Even though CPM S35VN retains its sharpness well, it can lose its sharpness a little faster than CPM S30V. 

## Which is better? CPM S35VN compared to...? 
Many types of steel are used to produce fixed knives. But which steel type is better? First and foremost, this depends on what you are looking for. However, if you do want to make a comparison: CPM S35VN is, of course, similar to its predecessor CPM S30V. This steel type retains its sharpness well but is not as tough as CPM S35VN.

## Wüsthof Classic White blade: laser-sharp stainless steel


The forged blade from chromium-vanadium steel(X50CrMoV15) is forged from one piece of steel. The knife is sharpened according to Wüsthof's PEtec technology. This means that for each blade the sharpening angle is determined with the help of a computer. Afterwards the blade is sharpened with laser precision on a wet sharpening stone. After thorough inspection each knife will leave the production line, for a long life of intensive use.


The steel is modified as such that it will have a high hardness of 58 Rockwell. As such the knife retains its sharpness for a really long time. Don't worry if your knife loses some of its sharpness, simply move it over a honing steel a couple of times. The result is a razor-sharp knife that is amazing to work with.

## History of Spyderco

One of the most important individuals in the knife world is Sal Glesser. In 1967, he founded Spyderco with his wife Gail. In 1981 the first Spyderco pocket knife was produced, the C01 Worker. This knife stood out because of the round hole in the blade. Specifically made to open the knife with one hand. This hole, also called the Spydiehole, is still one of the most important features on a Spyderco knife.

It all started in a small van. In this van, they drove through the States to sell their products. Nowadays, Spyderco works with factories all over the world: China, Japan, Taiwan, Italy and, of course, their own factory in America. This is for all Provoke fans! After last year's great success, it was only a matter of time. CRKT updated the famous CRKT Provoke! They even did so a couple of times. ## Aogami / Blue Paper Steel

Taken literally, Aogami means 'blue paper' in Japanese. It owes its name to the packaging in which the manufacturer Hitachi delivers the steel. It is a version of White Paper Steel; a very pure type of steel taken from iron-rich river sand with only carbon as an alloy. White Paper Steel is similar to the traditional Tamahagene steel that was/is used to create Japanese swords.

Blue Paper Steel is White Paper Steel with the addition of small amounts of chrome and tungsten. It might make the steel a little less traditional but it does improve the qualities. Blue Paper Steel is more resistant to corrosion and chipping than White Paper Steel, although it is certainly not a stainless type of steel.

## The essence of the ESEE Izula 
The name *Izula* comes from the Peruvian *Isula* ant, better known as the bullet ant. This aggressive, strong creature is known for its strength and perseverance, exactly what the Izula knives also offer. They are designed as **portable survival knives** for situations in which a large knife is simply not practical. 

The ESEE Izula has a full-tang construction of **1095 carbon steel**, a steel that is easy to sharpen and that is known for its toughness. In fact, you could probably sharpen it with a stone you'd find in a river! The Izula is finished with a powder coating, which protects the steel from rust, although proper maintenance remains key. ## The Spyderco Bow River, designed by Phil Wilson


Another highlight within Spyderco's budget segment is the new Bow River. A very interesting and affordable knife with 8cr13MoV steel, designed by world-famous knife maker Phil Wilson. Remarkable about the Bow River is that, in general, Spyderco doesn't have that many budget fixed knives. As such the Bow River is a fun entry-level model to the world of fixed knives. ## How it all began

For years Mike Stewart had been working in the knife business for many different famous American companies when he began to notice that in terms of production compromises were made. Knives were no longer produced the way he would like them to be. When you reach that point there are several things you can do. Stewart opted for the pro-active approach: in 2001 he established Bark River Knives with his wife Lesley in his barn in Bark River, Michigan. Shortly after they moved to Escabana, Michigan, where you can still find the Bark River workshop today. Stewart’s son Jim and daughter Jacquelyn also work in the company. As a true family business they continuously try to improve the quality and introduce new designs every single day.

When I sat down to write this article, I didn’t know where to start. Do I approach this by beginning with the legacy of the Bark River company? Do I jump straight into the specs of the knife or do I talk about the properties of 3V steel? I don’t believe it really matters much, except to tell you that this knife is simply exceptional.

The price point of the Bushcrafter is a little out of my usual spend on a knife, but with Bark River Knives having the reputation they do, I was very interested to see what all the fuss was about. As the old saying goes ‘a ten euro knife will cut just as a well as a 300 euro knife.’ Probably… But there is a difference. The build and fit of this knife is really something to behold, and truly exceeded my expectations.

## LionSteel Twain: innovative button lock
The first newcomer is the LionSteel Twain, a button-lock knife that stands out with its double integral construction. The handle is made of one piece of titanium. Now, we see this quite often, but in this case an integral backspacer has also been placed over it. That really is a novelty! This knife is available in several versions, including a striking handle made from Green Canvas Micarta and various carbon fibre options. 

The blade, made of the high-quality CPM MagnaCut steel, measures about 7.6 cm and has an almost completely flat grind. This combination ensures excellent performance in everyday use. The deep-carry pocket clip, although not reversible, is practical and discreet. Thanks to the thumb hole, the Twain offers smooth and reliable action. This is LionSteel's first pocket knife with button-lock mechanism. Although, that's only if we don't count the MKM Miura, also produced by LionSteel, for the sake of convenience.

I have had the pleasure writing reviews for Knivesandtools for over two years now. In that time I have experimented with large survival knives like the [Becker BK2](kato://content/migrated_topic_490) and the [ESEE 6](kato://content/migrated_topic_647). I’ve looked at high-end blades such as the [Fällkniven S1X](kato://content/migrated_topic_573) and the [Bark River Bushcrafter](kato://content/migrated_topic_519), and I’ve also used more specialized knives like the [Lionsteel BestMan and the ESEE JG5](kato://content/migrated_topic_626). Some of them I have liked, some I have loved… others I didn’t gel with so well.

After giving all of these knives dirt time and writing for this website for so long, one would wonder how to keep up with creating original ideas and interesting articles for you the reader, without starting to sound like a broken record! The truth is, I believe the tool writes the article; each one as unique in its quirks and character as the next. Steel choices, shapes, hardness, materials and profiles give a blade its character, and my job has simply been to bring to light, in my own words, what my feelings are when interacting with these tools. With such variety and choice out there, I believe there is a perfect knife for everyone. I believe I have found such a knife for my own needs. The LT Wright Gary Wines Bushcrafter is simply my most favourite knives I have ever owned.

## Taking a Different Approach


I have always been an advocator of having the right tools for the job. If I need to split wood, I use a hatchet. If I want to carve a spoon, I use a spoon carving knife. Because of this, the knife on my hip tends to be no longer than 4 inches, with a relatively thin width, and so far I have had no need for anything bigger.


However, many of my fellow outdoorsmen prefer themselves to carry a one-tool-option, and to know and trust that the knife on their belt is going to be there for anything that they might call upon it for. Be that cutting up the evening meal or ploughing through knotty pine logs.


I have always been curious as to how this would actually play out in practice, so I decided to ditch the tool roll, and try my hand at using just one tool for all my outdoor chores for a while, and there is no knife I could think better suited to this experiment, than the [KA BAR Becker BK2](kato://product/KABK2).
