# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

### Processing payment transactions

* To properly process the payment of your order you choose a payment method. You share the remaining information with this payment method and your bank, not with us.

### Communication

* In order to simplify the communication with regards to your offer and/or other questions, we use your contact information. This information and the contents of this communication between you and us is stored at a secure location.
* Via our web shop we always enable you to ask questions via different channels (such as chat, email, telephone and social media). You are the one to decide which information you provide when you use one of these channels.

### Execution of statutory duty

* In order to comply to our legal obligation we store your order history, including the payment details, within the set statutory period. The Tax and Customs Administrations requires us to store our administration including your invoice, payment and order history for seven years.

### Fraud prevention

* In order to prevent fraud we, if there is a legitimate interest, will use your IP address, address and payment information. In the case of an official request from an authority in the field of law and order we will share this information.

## Retention periods

The personal data will be stored as long as is necessary to process your order(s), including the guarantee, unless there is a legal obligation that requires longer storage (like the fiscal storage obligation as mentioned above).

## Disclosure to third parties

We pass on your information to our partners involved in the execution of our business. Under no circumstances are they allowed to use this information for other purposes than those stated by us. The secure transfer of your information is guaranteed by an editorial agreement between Knivesandtools and the partner in question. We are committed to this. If we are not satisfied, we will stop all cooperation.

Our web shop has been enhanced with social media buttons. These buttons will only provide a link and won’t share personal information with third parties. Because you can log in via a social media account, the social media party involved will pass on the email address that belongs to the user account.

## SHIPPING AND SHIPPING COSTS

We keep stock at KATO Group's local warehouse in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. Every product has a stock label indicating if a product is in stock and ready for shipment or not. Orders will be shipped with DHL and GLS (who hand our parcels over to local mail carriers). 

## PRICES AND VAT

Prices listed on our website include VAT. Depending on the destination of the parcel the VAT will be deducted in the checkout. The same applies when ordering as a company with a valid VAT number.

## RETURNS AND REFUNDS

2 We will send you a warranty number and an advice on the possible outcome.

3 You will send the product to us.

4 We will send you an email as soon as we have received the product and the warranty claim.

5 Our product specialist will check your product and, if necessary, send it to our supplier. We will do whatever we can to fix the product.

6 Our customer service department will inform you about the status and progress .

### The warranty process

You need a warranty number for the warranty claim. You can request this number via the [contact form](https://support.knivesandtools.com/hc/en-us?w-warranty=1). You write down this number on the packing slip, turning it into your warranty form. We will email you the instructions on how to return the product. When processing warranty cases we often depend on the suppliers and the time it will take them to resolve the issue. That is why a warranty claim can take some time.

### Send it back to us

When returning one or more items, please ensure that everything is properly packed to avoid transport damage. It is preferable to return your item in the box it came in. Please include all accessories and included parts in their original packages.

### Follow-up

* The return package goes to the collecting point in Germany. From there it is forwarded to our warehouse in the Netherlands. As soon as the package is received there, we will send a confirmation. Processing and handling can take up to 8 working days.
* If the return meets the conditions you will receive the purchase amount within four working days. We will always refund the money via the payment method used when you paid for your order.

There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

## 1. Placing an order

All orders are placed online either via our website [www.knivesandtools.co.uk](http://www.knivesandtools.co.uk), or when contacting our customer service department via phone.

## 2. Shipping and Delivery time

Our warehouse is located in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. All products are shipped from this location. Every product listed on the website has a stock label indicating if a product is in stock and ready for shipment or not. Orders to the United Kingdom are shipped with UPS and normally take 3-5 business days to arrive.

## 3. Prices and VAT

Prices listed on the website are in British pounds and include VAT, fees and charges. Customers from the Channel Islands, with the exception of Jersey and Guernsey, do not pay VAT at knivesandtools.co.uk, but will have to pay local VAT upon delivery.

## 4. 18+

All tools listed on knivesandtools.co.uk enhanced with an 18+ logo are only sold to people aged 18 or over. By placing an order and accepting our terms & conditions you declare that you are at least 18 years of age. We may ask you to provide us with proof of identification before we ship your order.

All orders containing products that are labeled 18+ will be shipped with a mandatory identification/age check upon delivery and require an adult signature.

If you are unable to offer sufficient proof that you, as recipient and creator of the order, are at least 18 years of age or older, UPS will take the package and return it to Knivesandtools in the Netherlands. If you are not at home during the initial delivery attempt, UPS will try again later or send the parcel to a pick-up point. In either case, you must be able to identify yourself and prove you are at least 18 years of age or older. If you are unable to do so your parcel will be returned to Knivesandtools. Please note that we may charge you, the customer, for any expenses made during the return process.

## 5. Returns and Refunds

We want to make sure that the products you've ordered live up to your expectations. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied, you can return your order for a full refund* within 30 days of delivery, in accordance with your rights under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

*Please note: we may ask for compensation if a product you return can no longer be sold as a new product because it has been used or is damaged.

We will always credit you the same way you paid us (ie credit card or wire transfer) You will receive a refund within 14 days after we have received the return shipment.

### Damaged or defective items

In most cases we will ask you to return the product for further inspection. After inspection we will either replace, repair or refund the product. You will never be charged any additional shipping or handling fees for replacement shipments.

### Warranty

All items on our website come with a warranty of at least 2 years, even though the manufacturer limits this warranty to 1 year. We say ‘at least’ because there are brands who offer a longer period (e.g. Fenix, Eden).

3 You will send the product to us.

4 We will send you an email as soon as we have received the product and the warranty claim.

5 Our product specialist will check your product and, if necessary, send it to our supplier. We will do whatever we can to fix the product.

6 Our customer service department will inform you about the status and progress .

### The warranty process

You write down this number on the packing slip, turning it into your warranty form. We will email you the instructions on how to return the product. When processing warranty cases we often depend on the suppliers and the time it will take them to resolve the issue. That is why a warranty claim can take some time.

* If there is any damage to the product as a result of use that does not include determining the functionality of the goods, we reserve the right to charge depreciation.

## Features of the Chris Reeve Inkosi 

The Inkosi took the pocket knife world by storm, in part because of the innovative upgrades such as the oversized bronze washers. The Inkosi is exactly what we have come to expect from Chris Reeve. Think of the best features of the Sebenza 21, the Umnumzaan and the Sebenza 25; add it all up and you'll get the Chris Reeve Inkosi! 

 

### The Chris Reeve Inkosi: the evolution of the Sebenza 25 

In terms of appearance, the Inkosi is quite similar to the Sebenza 25. Like the Sebenza 25, the Inkosi has the very distinctive finger recesses in the handle. However, the Inkosi is a lot more innovative and has a lot of new upgrades. The main difference can be found looking at the washers. The Inkosi has oversized bronze washers.This makes the knife extra sturdy and the CPM MagnaCut blade is completely sandwiched at the hinge screw. The stop pin has also been made a lot stronger, and the pocket clip has been slightly twisted so that it no longer rests on the lockbar. 

 

Furthermore, the Inkosi is equipped with double thumb studs, so that it can be used both left-handed and right-handed people. The standoff and the lanyard pin function as one at the back of the handle. This makes the knife more beautiful and compact. An interesting detail is the ceramic detent ball in the lockbar. This is located at the tip of the lockbar and acts as both lockface and detent ball. Unlike the Sebenza 21, the titanium part of the lockbar does not touch the blade of the Inkosi. This prevents most wear and tear of the titanium. However, it does not make the Inkosi's lock-up any less strong. Unlocking has even become a lot smoother as there is a smaller contact point with the blade. 

 

The blade is 8% thicker than that of the Sebenza 25 and enhanced with a large hollow grind. Chris Reeve achieved this by using a bigger wheel to create the grind. As a result, the blade has the same strength as a full-flat grind while ensuring an extended sharpening durability. It's clear to us why Chris Reeve chose the name 'Inkosi', meaning 'Chief' or 'leader' in Zulu: this robust all-rounder can handle any task!

## Prototyping and milling bits


Were you able to produce a working fixture? If so it is time to start producing and testing prototypes with different tools. Used a milling bit too long? You will see it when you look at the finish of the tool. A part of the finish is therefore determined by how often the bits are replaced. A bit can be cheap, but also pretty expensive. Usually a bit is used for milling away material and another for the finish. Often another very fine bit carefully moves over the surface for that nice finish. Might take a lot of time, but it is definitely worth it.


## Finish after milling


In the end you are left with all the parts that were cut out with a CNC-machine. Done? No. They now namely have a surface finish directly from the milling machine. As such you cannot avoid the fact that every part needs to be finished by hand. Sanding, sandblasting, satinizing: whatever the knife needs.


## Cost of a CNC-machine


The CNC-machine itself also doesn't come for free. Modern CNC-machines that are used today can easily take you back 100.000 euros. Sometimes even more, depending on what the machine can do. That amount will be the basis. This does not include the additional costs of the accessories and spare parts. Cost of items such as cutters and coolant. Maintenance. Costs of a CNC-operator that will control the machine, and its (additional) training.


## Conclusion


So is it really that terrible working with a CNC-machine? Absolutely not. It is the only consistent way of shaping so many parts in 3D. And compared to cutting it out by hand with a saw, sharpening and milling parts it is, in most cases, even cheaper.


You do, however, need to know that it is definitely not cheap. And that it does require a great deal of craftsmanship. From drawing to fixture design and from prototyping to the actual production. It is not that simple.

We do have to say that he uses a relatively old model from the mid-nineties. Today CNC-machines are little more advanced, faster, and can handle a lot more. The basic principles, however, remain the same and you still need to know what you are doing.

This makes them real collector's items! But that is not all. Chris Reeve Knives surprised the knife world in 2018 with the new Impinda. A cooperation with knife maker and designer Bill Harsey. This ground-breaking modern slipjoint, with an innovative slipjoint mechanism, definitely appealed to us as Europeans. At the Shot Show we got the opportunity to take a closer look at the Impinda and the new CGG models with Tim Reeve, and to learn more about the story behind these remarkable knives.

The Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 is a icon in the knife world. As a knife manufacturer you handle such a showpiece with great care. And yet there was that announcement in June of 2019: the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31! We would love to tell you more about what changes and what it means for the Sebenza 21.


## Chris Reeve Sebenza 31: the innovations


As the name might already suggest the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 is an update of the Sebenza 21. This also means that it isn't a completely new model. Only an update with some important changes when compared to the 21.


### Ceramic lockbar interface


Okay this might sound difficult, but it really isn't. The Sebenza 21 is enhanced with a hardened titanium lockbar which immediately closes on the back of the blade to lock it. New for the 31 is that a ceramic ball was pressed into the end of the lockbar. This ball serves as a detent ball and 'lockbar insert' at the same time. Ceramic is harder than titanium and will therefore not wear out as quickly. It will also move better when it comes into contact with steel.

This system is not completely new. The Inkosi and Umnumzaam were already enhanced with this system. It is a lot more sustainable than that of the 21 and therefore an improvement. Characterizing for Chris Reeve Knives is that they always carefully think about these types of innovations. Decisions are not made overnight. Still one of the strengths of this rock-solid brand.

## What are Heavy-Duty EDC knives?


Heavy-Duty EDC knives are pocket knives that, because of their construction, are capable of carrying out the more demanding tasks. In some countries you cannot carry a pocket knife, but are able to carry a fixed knife up to a certain length.

Of course not every knife is great for EDC use, although opinions sometimes differ. We, however, believe that a fixed EDC knife should easily be carried on a daily basis. With the help of a great sheath or other carrier solution, for instance, or because the knife is so compact and practical you can easily carry it with you. Better and more exclusive materials make the knives more expensive. A Byrd knife is often priced between 30 and 60 euros. With occasional outliers. While Spyderco knives often start at 50 euros and can go up to 250 euros for the standard models. ### Range:

Spyderco achieves this number by producing many different versions of a popular model. Not only in terms of colour and handle material. Also in terms of types of steel and sometimes even locking mechanisms. Spyderco also produces knives for specific target groups. That's why they chose to stain the birch wood to give it its red colour.

## Why sharpening convex knives is easy


Sharpening your own knives is getting more and more popular. Sharpening a flat grind, scandi grind or hollow grind is done the same way. You hold the knife at a fixed angle and move the knife, in the same angle, alongside, for instance, a [sharpening stone](kato://content/migrated_pageid_343). As mentioned before, a convex edge has a curved blade. However, sharpening stones are flat, so how do you sharpen a round surface with a flat stone?


Many think that a convex grind is difficult to sharpen. However, with the right knowledge sharpening a convex edge is actually really easy!


When you sharpen at a fixed angle you are constantly focused on sharpening your knife at the right angle. As soon as you change the angle you can change the edge of your knife. The problem is that sharpening by hand is not very accurate. You will never be able to sharpen with a fixed angle without using sharpening aids. When you sharpen a convex edge you don't use a fixed angle. As such you benefit from the lack of precision when you sharpen by hand. As such sharpening a knife with a convex edge by hand feels very natural. In addition, with a convex edge you don't just sharpen the very narrow edge but the entire blade. As such you have more room for small errors. As you can see there are many things to be mentioned that emphasize that sharpening a convex edge is easy!

The easiest way is using a sharpening machine. The grinding belt moves with you as you hold the knife against it, which causes the belt to bend. As such you will always sharpen with a 'convex' angle. ## Who is SENCUT?

[SENCUT](kato://category/sencutbrand) is a new brand and a part of knife manufacturer WE Knife. After the success of Civivi, WE Knife decided to expand its range. They did an amazing job with SENCUT! ## What is SENCUT known for?

## How did the Grailer 2 first see the light of day?


The Grailer 2 is the production version of the Findus design from Simen Stryckers. He is a young Belgian designer who has been producing amazing knives in his garage for years. His goal is to produce knives that are beautiful and functional at the same time. Nothing more, nothing less. This is how you recognize his sleek design style. Those carefully selected lines make it look modern and elegant.


Every day Simen works hard producing even better knives.  And with his brother Maarten he also works on building better machines. Their training in mechanical engineering really came in handy here. They, for instance, built different machines and tools to produce their own knives. Time and time again they prove how with creativity you can do a lot more than you might think.

In the knife world the use of CNC-milling is becoming more and more common. Even small companies or custom knife makers know how to handle a CNC-machine these days. Does this also mean that the production of knives will be easier? Is it truly as simple as copying a piece of paper in a copying machine? Knivesandtools explains!


## What is CNC-milling?


CNC stands for *Computer Numerical Control*. Simply put this means computer-controlled milling. You upload a program to a computer after which a milling machine cuts out a block of material until you have the parts you need.


This sounds simple, but in reality it is not. Because even though a CNC-machine can do a lot by itself, it still needs a lot of human help. And preparation. Mostly a lot of preparation.


## What makes the CNC-milling of knives difficult?


Let's start at the beginning: the design of the knife. The design is not generated by a computer. A designer comes up with the design. A drawing program is used to come up with the shape, size and dimensions. This step is often preceded by a range of sketches and drawings on paper.


The result is a nice drawing, perhaps a digital 3D-model. This doesn't, however, mean that you have a drawing a CNC-machine can handle. This drawing needs to be converted for your specific CNC-machine. The machine needs to know which size cutters need to be used. A difference of one hundredth of a millimetre already ensures that a scale won't fit properly. For it the drawing is converted to a Gcode. A special language that bridges the gap between a drawing and milling.

The CNC milling of knives: Is it really that easy? 

When you purchase a knife we recommend getting familiar with the types of steel available and choosing one that suits the expectations you have for a knife. We made an overview of the most common types of steel used for kitchen knives.

Customers often ask us about chipped knives. When we're talking about a chip in a knife, we're not talking about a little transmitter to track your knife, nor are we talking about a salty snack. Chips are little nicks on the edge of the blade. This damage will cause the edge of your knife to become blunt.

A chipped knife can happen to anyone. It could happen, for example, by accidentally cutting into a piece of bone when using the wrong cutting technique. Mistakes are easily made. You can avoid a lot of trouble by simply using your knife carefully. However, if your knife still ends up with a chipped edge, it is often possible to solve this problem yourself. How?
