5.11: it all started with a pair of pants
5.11 Tactical started out as a clothing line created by mountain climber Royal Robbins. When he reached the top of a climb in Yosemite California, he noticed that the pants he was wearing were not suited for climbing trips. Robbins decided to develop a pair of pants that was more sustainable and had more functions. He started producing pants with the name 5.11. These pants all had a characterizing belt and a slanted pocket.
The name 5.11 comes from the highest difficulty level for rock climbing mentioned in the Yosemite system, which was developed by Robbins. The difficulty level is jokingly defined as: "After thorough inspection, you conclude that this step is impossible." However, someone still occasionally achieves it
