The Coravin wine system: a breakthrough in wine

Up until today it was practically impossible to pour a glass of wine without removing the cork from the bottle. The Coravin wine system, however, enables you to discover the entire world of wine per glass. As such you can allow the wine to age a little further in the original bottle.

Coravin wine system: how does it work?

With the Coravin wine system you can drink wine per glass without opening the bottle. The system enables you to try the wine to see if it has aged enough. If it hasn’t, simply leave the bottle to age a little more. This innovative system has been enhanced with a hollow needle that penetrates the cork (and the foil!). You pour the wine via the needle. The space created in the bottle by the same needle is filled with argon gas. Because of this gas no oxygen will reach the wine. As a result oxidation will not occur and the wine won’t become acidic! As soon as you have filled your glass pull out the needle and the cork will close off hermetically to make sure that it is perfectly airtight once more. The system works with all bottles enhanced with a natural cork. For bottles enhanced with a screw cap there is also the reusable Coravin cap. This cap is sold separately.

Coravin: the history

Founder Greg Lambrecht dreamt of pouring a glass of wine without removing the cork from the bottle. As a result the remaining wine could easily be returned to be basement to be enjoyed later. With years of experience in physics, mechanical engineering and medical equipment, Greg designed the Coravin system to be able to taste wines whenever he wanted. After many years of designing and developing he was able to successfully pour a glass of wine with the Generation 1 in 2003. A system that keeps the cork in place, but leaves you with a great glass of wine that tastes as if it comes from an unopened bottle. In 2009 the first blind testing was a success. In the end the American company Coravin was founded in 2011 and launched the first Coravin wine system in 2013. And it was a big hit! In 2013 the system was called ‘Best of What’s News 2013+’ by Popular science. More awards soon followed.
