A bread knife has a serrated blade. That ensures that the bread is not crushed because you have to push too hard. The serrations easily go through the hard crust because the pressure of the blade is concentrated in the points of the serrations. A bread knife usually has a 20 to 30 cm blade.
With a long blade you need fewer movements to cut the bread which provides a more even result. Long rolls can also be easily sliced open.
